Meteorological Winter

Yes, meteorological winter is just around the corner. Before I look at the averages and records for December and meteorological winter. Even with 5 days yet to go November 2022. Will be at least the second snowiest Novembers on record at Grand Rapids. That was not the case at Muskegon and Lansing. The total snow fall at Grand Rapids so far is 28.0” At Lansing they only have recorded 10.1” and at Muskegon just 6.1”. The record of 31.0” was set in 2014 at Lansing the record there is 21.8” set in 1921 and at Muskegon the record is 25.7 set in 1995.

Now in looking at past winter season when Grand Rapids had a very snowy November and then see how the rest of the winter turned out. Well in looking at the current top 7 snowiest November’s 2014 the snowiest that year December also set a record for snow fall but it was the least snowy with just 1.0” of snow fall. That winter was a weak El Nino winter. The old 2nd place is 1951 with 26.9” that December seen a massive 51.3” of snow fall and that winter set the table for winters here in GR with 132.0” That winter was a moderate El Nino winter. Thanks Slim! It would be nice to have more accurate or official snow totals for the lakeshore areas. I would guess the Holland/Zeeland area to be around the 6 to 8 inch range for November which would be pretty close to average.
