Weather Trivia

Oct 20, 1770
An exceedingly great storm struck eastern New England causing
extensive coastal damage from Massachusetts to Maine, and the
highest tide in 40 years.

Oct 21, 1934
A severe windstorm lashed the northern Pacific coast. In Washington
State, the storm claimed the lives of 22 persons, and caused 1.7
million dollars damage, mostly to timber. Winds, gusting to 87 mph
at North Head WA, produced waves twenty feet high.

Oct 22, 1965
The temperature soared to 104 degrees at San Diego CA. Southern
California was in the midst of a late October heat wave that year.
Los Angeles had ten consecutive days with afternoon highs reaching
100 degrees.

Oct 23, 2002
Freezing drizzle and freezing rain occurred over much of southwest
Kansas. The biggest impacts related to the storm were ice
accumulations of an eighth to a quarter of an inch across far
southwest Kansas from Johnson to Elkhart, east through Sublette and
Meade. Reports of ice accumulation of a half inch were reported in
Meade county. Tree limbs and power lines were taken down by the
weight of the ice in Seward and also in Stafford counties. There
were several reports of damage to fences and vehicles due to tree
limbs falling on them. Approximately 100 customers in Liberal were
without electricity due to the downed power lines. Ice storms are
rare in October.

Oct 24, 1785
A four day rain swelled the Merrimack River in New Hampshire and
Massachusetts to the greatest height of record causing extensive
damage to bridges and mills.

Oct 25, 1997
A major late fall blizzard struck part of west central and
southwest Kansas dumping 10 to 20 inches of snow across the area.
A strong north wind whipped the snow into 15 to 20 foot drifts.
Most roads were impassable for several days after the snow ended.
22,000 head of cattle died both in pastures and in the feedlots.
Monetarily this amounted to $11 million in losses. Additionally,
the cattle that did not die during the blizzard suffered severe
weight loss which led to higher operating costs for feedlots.
Over 35,000 head of cattle perished across western Kansas.

Oct 26, 1859
New York City had their earliest substantial snow of record as
four inches blanketed the city.

Today’s weather should remain fairly calm by late October standards and may be the nicest day moving into the weekend.  Say goodbye to the 60s and the 50s are preparing for their grand departure into the sunset when we get into midweek next week.  Below is the NWS discussion: (this is the reason I have been posting explanations of weather fronts and wave patterns to help you better understand their lingo)…

We continue to look at a generally unsettled period through the seven day period, with colder air eventually arriving by the end of next week. Our first feature of note is in the Saturday afternoon through Sunday morning time frame when a soaking rain is expected for much of the area. This soaking will be the result of the upper low currently near the TX/OK border lifting up toward the area. The heaviest rain with this system will likely stay to our south and southeast as the triple point and deepest Gulf moisture stays there. We will see rain via the occluded front, and eventually the deformation zone with the upper low coming right at the area. Thunder threat this far north looks to be quite low with instability staying south of the area. We should see a break in the rainfall then from Sunday afternoon through Monday, before rain chances increase Monday night into Tuesday. A short wave will round the base of the western low to help bring a surface wave toward the area. At the same time, the long wave low will shift east, and support additional development of the low with better upper divergence taking shape over the region. We believe this system will bring mainly rain as the upper low is likely to remain over the Rockies and Plains at that time. We believe the more progressive GFS solution pushing the whole upper low through, bringing more cold air in, is one of the typical issues it has in this scenario. Favoring a solution closer to the Euro, a front will stall out from the Gulf to near Ontario as it will become nearly parallel to the upper jet. It will wait for the entire upper low complex to lift out of the western U.S., which will help to develop a more significant sfc wave along the front. This will likely mean another soaking rain for the area as early as late Wed, and more so Wednesday night into Thursday. Once this passes through on Thursday, the door will be open for the much colder air with the upper low to flood over the area. This is where rain showers with the low will eventually mix with/change over to snow. The changeover of precipitation types would likely occur late Thursday into Thursday evening with the current model trends. This will likely fluctuate a little being that we are still a week out with a lot of factors being involved.

Indy was the only one talking about big snows and he was simply stating what the gfs long range model was showing, not stating we would see big snows! Please keep your facts straight!

With cloudy skies the current temperature here is 42. The H/L yesterday was 52/41. For today the average H/L is 57/39. The record high is 78 in 2012 and the record low is 20 in 1960. As others have reported there are still a lot of leaves on the trees yet and according to this color report we still have not reached peak.

This year will be a good year for the old weather lore saying

When leaves fall early,
Fall and Winter will be mild;
When leaves fall late,
Winter will be severe.

Good morning! Good quiz but MV why not wait and put the answers in a later post? In the weather Trivia wow Kansas has had a blizzard and a ice storm in late October! That is something else. And that Heat Wave in California is also a big feat but is gets hot there with a east wind in the summer and fall.

Our son has a hockey game Saturday afternoon at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube, which isn’t very far from The Big House. Hope the traffic isn’t too bad getting into town.

Slim

I don’t know Mark. Years ago when my youngest had to go to the UM hospital we would not go on game weekend in the fall so good luck on both your son’s game and getting in and out of Ann Arbor.
