Thunderstorms

Thunderstorms.

While it is only March it is not too early to think about thunderstorms. It seems to me that the number and intensity of storms has been down the last few years. Any way here is some information on thunderstorms.

My sister lived in Fort Myers Florida for about 15 years before she passed away I had the opportunity to visit south Florida in each of the 12 months in that time and I can tell you that late November to April is by far the best time to be in south Florida but even then there is always the chance of a thunderstorm But come June to September you will see thunderstorms just about every day and many are very intense so now what cities in the US have the most storms?

Here’s a look at the top 10 most thunderstorm-prone cities in the U.S., along with their average number of annual storms:

  1.       Fort Myers, Florida – 89
    2. Tampa, Florida – 87
    3. Tallahassee, Florida – 83
    4. Gainesville, Florida – 81
    5. Orlando, Florida – 80
    6. Mobile, Alabama – 79
    7. West Palm Beach, Florida – 79
    8. Lake Charles, Louisiana – 76
    9. Daytona Beach, Florida – 75
    10. Vero Beach, Florida – 75

In Michigan it is reported on average Muskegon 35, Grand Rapids 34, Flint 33, Detroit and Lansing 32, Alpena 30, Sault 29 and Marquette 28. For tornadoes in the period 1960 to 2010 in the county they are located in for example Kent for Grand Rapids.  Flint 35, Grand Rapids 28, Detroit and Lansing 25, Alpena 14, Marquette 6 that is a large county, the Sault 6 another large county. And Muskegon 5. So Muskegon with the most reported thunderstorms on average has the least number of tornadoes.  As of today Grand Rapids has yet to have a single strike of lightning or a rumble of thunder this year yet. The last time GR had a lightning strike reported was back on November 10th

Here are some sites for safety before and during a thunderstorm.

Now if any one is interested in Spotter Training classes here is some information on the on line classes for this year. Note I singed up for a online class for March 20th out of the Detroit office.

I have Spring flowers growing. We are all entitled to how we feel about the seasons but by this time I am ready for Spring. Don’t get me wrong I love outdoor ice skating and building snowman with grandkids and a good old fashion snowball fight.

Wow, looks like the rocky guy/gal wandered a bit off topic again today. Anyways, I agree Slim. It seems like the past few years the number and intensity of thunderstorms in our area seems to be down quite a bit. Could say the same for our lack of big Winter storms as well. One thing I’ve noticed the past few years going to the mountains in Colorado, thunderstorms up in the mountains during the Summer are like clockwork. Almost every day starts out clear and sunny, then by 2 p.m. thunderstorms come rolling through. Always a good idea to start… Read more »

You do it every year, on man made snow, 4 hours north of us!! Just this year you had to do it for 3 out of the 4 months of winter!! Keep driving the tires off that car for man made snow, I’m going to sit back and enjoy the warmth of this front loaded spring at home in my own green back yard!

Nice morning 😀 Just went for a run around reeds lake, still some ice fishers out on the lake.. I wouldn’t trust it but I’m sure they are more experienced and know their safety.
