Rain & Snow Showers – Michigan’s Biggest Tornadoes from WOODTV

After today it appears we will enter into another extended period of mainly dry conditions.  We have some rain and snow showers moving through the central lower this morning though it will not amount to much, just a hundredth of an inch or so.  We have had .92 of an inch for the month here at the station.

The region will see temperatures mostly in the mid to upper 30s to start the day. Conditions will dry out from west to east from late morning into the early afternoon. Cooler temperatures are expected for the remainder of the week with some locations seeing a chance of overnight frost.

Pollen counts will be lower today with the moisture in the area, but tomorrow they will zip right back up to high counts.

Forecast Discussion

-- Rain and snow today with breezy conditions --

The latest radar and satellite imagery shows the upper low complex
well over the state early this morning. The center of the main low
is dropping south toward Saginaw Bay, while a trough from the low
extends to the WSW. The showers on the radar shows this nicely.

This precipitation will pass through the area through today,
lingering longer closer to the low toward Lansing and Jackson. P-
types look to be mainly rain for western areas, while eastern areas
will see some snow initially with the coldest air aloft with the
low. We continue to think that a dusting of snow will be possible on
the grassy areas across interior portions of Central Lower.
Elsewhere, any snow that falls should melt almost immediately.

As the low and trough rotate east, the air will warm enough,
along with any diurnal boost to change everything to rain by this
afternoon. The rain should then end by rush hour for the U.S.-127
corridor.

-- Mostly dry this weekend with small chances of rain --

High pressure will build in for Friday, bringing drier air to the
whole area. Temperatures will drop enough tonight/Friday morning to
bring some frost to the area. As mentioned in the previous
discussion, coordination with local agriculture experts show the
only impacts at this time would be a freeze for the fruit areas
closer to the lakeshore. We do not see that happening tonight, so we
will not issue any headlines. Temperatures will be a few degrees
warmer on Friday with a bit more of sunshine, and not as cold of an
air mass.

The best chances for some rain this weekend will be over inland
areas on Saturday afternoon/evening, and over the far SE portion of
the area Sunday afternoon. Most of the time this weekend, it will
not be raining.

The rain showers on Saturday will result from weak troughing aloft
over the area, combining with some diurnal instability. The upper
ridge over the area Friday night will move east by Saturday. A short
wave trough passes by to our south, but an extension of this will
move across Lower MI also. There will be just enough lift and
instability with this, especially with daytime heating adding to the
instability. It would be just a few spotty showers away from the
lake, where the wind off of the lake will squash the instability
just enough.

The best chance of rain on Sunday, will be SE of GRR in the
afternoon. Forecast surface maps show a weak sfc low/trough out
ahead of the upper trough coming in across the Srn Great Lakes
again. Just enough instability once again with a diurnal boost, and
the weak focus available.

-- Continued cool next week with multiple chances of precipitation --

The work week next week does look to start out dry with a weak area
of ridging moving through. This will be short lived as the long wave
upper air pattern will be one that is generally from the NW. This
pattern will be conducive to short waves coming through, and
bringing a couple of frontal waves through.

The first one will come through Monday night and the first half of
Tuesday. The leading edge of the precipitation will start out as
rain, but has a decent potential to change to snow on the backside
of it as 850 mb temps drop to around -8C.

We will see some short wave ridging build in for late Tue through
much of the day on Wed. Another system will then drop down into the
area late on Wed, much in the same fashion as the Mon night system.
The leading edge of precipitation will likely be rain, with it
changing over to some snow for much of the area. The details in
timing and p-type will likely fluctuate a little by the time we get
to that period.

Slim

Light rain is falling here with a temperature of 38. The overnight low both here and officially was 34. The length of daylight today is about the same as on August 26th The record high for today of 84 was set in back 2002 and again in 2003. In the last 20 years the high today has been 80 or better. Then starting in 2018 it has been cold on this date. In 2018 the high of 35 is the record cold maximum for any April 15th and there was a inch of snow on the ground that day, then… Read more »
