First/Last Dates

With it now being late April, it is now time to look at some last/first dates. The readings I will look at are the last hard freeze using 28° the last 32° low and the last 37° low (that is the upper limit for frost) and then the 1st 70 high and 1st 75 and 80 high all of which should be reached in the next month.

For the last low of 28 or below the average date at Grand Rapids is April 19th the earliest was March 17, 1910. And the latest was May 18, 1973. Last year the last day that the low reached 28 was April 22. The average last day with a low of 32 or below at Grand Rapids is May 1st the earliest was April 6, 1925, and the latest was June 4th 1945. Last year it was May 7th and on average the last day with a low of 37 or below is May 17th the earliest was April 22nd, 1896, and the latest was June 11th 1980 Last year it was May 30th So for the most part by mid-May it should be ok to plant frost sensitive plants.

On the warm side of things, the 1st average 70° day is April 4th the earliest was March 3rd, 1983.   And the latest is May 3rd 1950 Last year it was March 23rd On average the 1st 75 day is April 17th the earliest was March 8th 2000 the latest was June 5th 1924. Last year it was April 6th on average the 1st 80 day at Grand Rapids is May 1st the earliest was March 14, 2012 the latest was June 12th 1924.

On average the last 1” snow fall at Grand Rapids is March 29th the earliest is February 19, 1908. The latest is May 10, 1902. This year the last 1” fell on March 7th Well we hope that will be the last 1” snow fall this year.

There has been some talk as to if the temperature readings at GRR and too cold well at the current time I have a reading of 46 and the last reading at GRR was 46.  I would like to point out that the readings taken at NWS office are the official readings for Grand Rapids. But that said no matter where a reading is taken a different reading can be taken just a short distance away and that reading could be different. There are warm and cold pockets all over. One that I had found when we were at Fort Myers Florida. One of the readings for Fort Myers is taken at Page Field. When we have been in Fort Myers the readings, I had on my Car outdoor thermometer would generally go up in the area near Page Field. Not sure why but that location was on many days a warm spot.

What a day! I was outside for most of the day and it was incredible! 81 degrees is about my max temp, but the dew point wasn’t bad! Now back to reality!

Still have a few indoor projects to finish up when we get home from vacay. Looks like there will be just enough crappy weather days to get them done after we get home.

Finally a good day for golf in West MI! Probably only the 2nd or 3rd day all month with good golf weather, despite the constant warm weather hype. Facts! 2022 we have seen below normal temps! Who knew?
