Winter Weather Advisory

Hope you enjoyed the rare all day sunshine yesterday even though it was frigid.  The cats and dogs enjoyed it as they were laying in the sunbeams coming through the windows.

Safe journey to Slim as he heads south to escape the merciless cold of our northern climate.  Enjoy your trip!

The winter weather advisory is in effect through 7am tomorrow morning with snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches today, and another 2 to 4 inches tonight for Allegan and Van Buren counties where some lake enhanced snow showers may set up tonight.

For the rest of the counties in blue the advisory expires at 7pm tonight with total snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches.

We may see some more snow on Thursday night then our temperatures will once again ascend above freezing on Friday to near 50 by next Sunday with some rain.


M.L.King Day: Snow. High near 23. Southeast wind 7 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. Total daytime snow accumulation of around 2 inches.

Tonight: Snow showers likely, mainly before 4am. Cloudy, with a low around 13. Light and variable wind becoming south southwest 5 to 7 mph after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New snow accumulation of less than one inch possible.

Tuesday: A 30 percent chance of snow showers, mainly before 1pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 22. Northwest wind 3 to 6 mph.

Tuesday Night: A 50 percent chance of snow showers, mainly after 1am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 10. Northwest wind around 6 mph becoming calm in the evening.

Wednesday: A 40 percent chance of snow showers before 1pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 24. West wind 5 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 22 mph.

Wednesday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 17.

Thursday: Sunny, with a high near 29.

Thursday Night: A slight chance of snow after 1am. Partly cloudy, with a low around 21.

Friday: Partly sunny, with a high near 35.

Friday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 29.

Saturday: A chance of rain. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 42.

Saturday Night: A chance of rain. Cloudy, with a low around 36.

Sunday: Rain likely. Cloudy, with a high near 44.

This winter continues to be behind last winter in the snow fall department. At this time last January Grand Rapids had 7.5” of snow fall so far this January the total is 6.7” as for the season last year as of today the total was 45.3” vs this season 40.9” While not a big difference last winters total for the season was 60.1” since 1999/00 the mean seasonal snow fall here in Grand Rapids is 80.3” last year was the 3rd lowest amount behind the 51.2” in 2011/12 and the 54.5” that fell in 1999/00. It is interesting that with all the talk about snow, we are actually heading for yet another consecutive year with well below normal snowfall. Take away the temperature variances, and it’s almost a clone of the past couple Winters.

Huh, imagine that! And Wood is always very cold biased, so it will probably end up warmer than what they call for.

That is true that Wood TV has a cold bias! Hopefully they are low balling the temps again and it will be WARMER than what they are saying!

Just a dusting here with some periodic flurries. Frankly, I’m not sure this is a WWA-worthy event. They said we are supposed to get 2-4″ in this area but in looking at the regional radar, I just don’t see that happening. I think we will be lucky to get one inch.

It is still lightly snowing here. It was somewhat heavier earlier. We probably got a good couple of inches of snow. The roads look slick.

The average H/L for Grand Rapids is 31/18
The record high is 57° in 1949 the coldest maximum is -3° in 1972
The record low is -15° in 1972 and the warmest minimum is 41 in 1894
The largest snow fall is 5.8” in 1997
The most on the ground is 21” in 1972
Last year the H/L was 36/14 and there was no snow on the ground.

Here at my house I am now at 1” of new snow fall. Still getting light snow falling with a temperature of 15°. We are leaving for Florida tomorrow and as luck would have it there is WSW’s and WWA and of course wind chill advisories all across the south.
