Warmest start to November

 

November 2020 had the most 70’s days of any November at Grand Rapids. With 6 days of 70 or better 2020 had the most of any November. And was the warmest first 10 days of any November. For the first 10 days of November 2020 the mean at Grand Rapids was 55.7 that is a departure of +11.6. Of the 6 days of 70 or better the highest was 77 and that is a tie for the 2nd warmest ever in November at Grand Rapids. There were 4 new record highs set in the first 10 days. The new records are 71° on the 7th 74° on the 8th 77° on the 9th and 74° on the 10th At Muskegon the mean there was 56.5 and that is a departure of + 12.5 Muskegon seen 3 days of 70 or better. At Holland their mean was 56.8 a departure of +12.1 and they had 5 days in the 70’s and to the east at Lansing they had a mean of 55.6 and that is a departure of +12.1. There were 6 days of 70 or better there. Lansing also had 4 new record highs and the records at Lansing go all the way back to 1963.

Before this year the most 70 or better days in any November was 4 in 2015, 2008 and 1938.

Here looking back at the past warmest starts to any November. Before this year the warmest start to any November was in 2015 when the mean for the 1st to thru the 10th was 51.9° That November had 4 days of 70 or better. The end mean for November 2015 was 45.5 for a departure of +5.4. The winter of 2015/16 was a mild winter with a mean of 31.5 and just 61.1” of snow fall.

Here are the old 2nd and 3rd warmest start to any November at Grand Rapids.

The first 10 days of November 2008 had a mean of 48.9 the month ended with a mean of 39.0 for a departure of +1.1 that November had 10.0” of snow fall the winter of 2008/09 was a rather cold one with a mean of 23.8 and 104.9” of snow fall.

In 1938 the first 10 days of November had a mean of 49.4 and the month ended up at 41.1 for a departure of +3.1. There was 5.3” of snow that November. The mean temperature for the winter of 1938/39 was 28.7 and there was 65.7” of snow fall.

Deer Season.

When I was young and living in both Bay City the start of deer season was always a big deal. That does not seem to be so much now days. Anyway, here are some records for opening of fire arms deer season.

At Grand Rapids. The average H/L on November 15th is 48/33 the record high is 68 in 1990 the coldest high is 18 in 1933 the record low is 10 in 1933. The most snow fall is 4.1” in 1969 the most on the ground was 5” in 1974.  Last year the H/L was 39/29 and there was 2” of snow on the ground.

At Alpena the average H/L is 43/29 the record high is 65 in 2001 the coldest maximum is 17 in 1933 the record low is -6 in 1933 most snow fall is 3” in 1973 and the most on the ground is 7” in 1967. Last year the H/L was 36/16 and there was 3” of snow on the ground.

At Houghton Lake the average H/L on November 15 is 43/28 the record high is 63 in 1957 the coldest maximum is 20 in 1933 the coldest low is +2 in 1933 the most snow fall is 8” in 1933 and the most on the ground is 13” in 1933. At Houghton Lake the H/L was 36/16 and there was 4” of snow on the ground.

At Sault Ste Marie the average H/L is 40/29 the record high is 61 in 1990 the coldest maximum is 11 in 1933 the coldest low is -2 in 1933 the most snow fall is 6.7” in 1965 and the most on the ground is 18” in 2014. Last year the H/L was 33/8 and up at the Sault they had 8” of snow on the ground.

And up at Marquette the average H/L is 38/23 the record high is 65 in 2004 the coldest maximum is 13 in 1933 the record low is 0 in 2014 the most snow fall is 10.8” in 1927 and the most on the ground is 24” In 2011. Last year the H/L was 29/4 and there was 1” of snow on the ground.

As you may have noticed 1933 had a very cold start to deer season. And that late fall and winter November and December were cold. January was mild and February and March were cold.
