Trick or Treat!

Trick or Treat

November is just around the corner, and we will have to see if this year November will be a trick or a treat.

The updated 30 year average the high/low starts out at 53.6/37.2 on the 1st and falls to 41.0/28.6 by the 30th the record high and the record low happened in the same year 1950. On November 1st the high reached 81 at Grand Rapids this was after highs of 71 on October 28 and record highs of79 on October 30 and 31st There are some who would call that a “heatwave” I will leave the “heatwave” debate open. After that high of 81 on the 1st it became much cooler and there was two weeks of below average temperatures before the shoe dropped. On November 23th the high was only 33 before dropping to +9 then on the 24th the high only reached 11 then it dropped all the way down to -9 on the 24th and then -10 for the low on the 25th That -10 is the all-time record low for November at Grand Rapids. Other lows that night in west Michigan were -7 at Kalamazoo, -13 at Holland and -14 at Muskegon. That -14 looks to be the coldest low for November in Michigan. The warmest mean for any November at Grand Rapids is 47.6 in 1931 the next 3 warmest November have been in the last 20 years with 2001 coming in at 46.8, 2015 at 45.5 and 45.4 in 2016 2020 and 2009 also are in the top 10 warmest of recorded history. The coldest mean for any November is 31.0 in 1951. In 1907 and 1906 no snow fall was reported at Grand Rapids there have been 5 years with just a trace of snow fall the last time was in 2001. The most snow fall was 31.0” in 2014.Other snowy November were in 1951 when 26.9” fell in 1991 with 25.3 in 2000 23.0” of snow fell here. The wettest November at Grand Rapids was in 2003 when 7.90” of rain and melted snow fell. The driest was in 1904 when just 0.06” of rain and melted snow fell. Last year November was much warmer than average and there was what some would call a “heatwave” when starting on the 6th there were 5 days in a row of 70 and better with highs of 70 or better. The following days had record highs of 71, 74, 77 and 74. A very nice and warm late fall weather indeed. The low for the month last year was 22 on the 14th Snow fall totaled 0.4” with 0.2” reported on the 1st and 24th

This is a repost from the other day of a winter forecast for Canada.

For what it is worth here is a winter forecast for Canada.

2021-2022 winter weather forecast: Here’s what Canadians can expect

Of note for our area is

“An early onslaught of cold and snow will be aided by the relatively mild Great Lakes. The incredible warmth earlier this fall means water temperatures are running anywhere from three to five degrees above normal.

This may initially moderate the Arctic chill, but it will also create the ideal setup for lake effect snow in November and December.

Like last winter, the quick start won’t last. Significant thaws are expected in January and February with above-normal rainfall.

These storms will also contain significant snow which is typical with La Niña. Yes, It is possible to have above-normal temperatures AND snowfall in the middle of winter.

March will likely shift colder than average again, prolonging the workload for those busy snowplow operators.

I’m expecting some great skiing and boarding conditions during the holidays, but resorts will have trouble with the freeze-thaw cycles mid-season.”

We shall see if this plays out.

I don’t have any loyalty to one team or the other, but wow that was a good game to watch!

It definitely lived up to the hype. I’m listening to the scanner. Unfortunately, lots of nonsense in EL. No couch is safe.

Thanks Slim! It definitely seems November’s have been much more mild in recent times, and your stats show that with the warmer ones.

Will the clouds move out for the northern lights tonight? Can anyone point in the direction if what time may be best for viewing???

Looks like by 10 or so the clouds should be breaking up. As for when the impact will happen, it’s a guessing game. Computer models have the impact around 6pm which would not be great for us cuz it’s not dark yet. However if it’s a long lasting storm, it could easily go on for hours after impact. Fingers crossed it hits earth around midnight!
