With winter gone and cold temps fallen by the wayside, it is time for allergy sufferers like myself to get stocked up on decongestants and allergy meds so our heads don’t explode.
This is the time of year when trees release their pollen. On an average day, pollen counts rise during the morning, peak about midday, and then gradually fall. So the lowest pollen counts are usually before dawn and in the late afternoon to early evening.
Juniper pollen is one of the most significant sources of tree-related allergy symptoms in the spring, while mulberry pollen can cause symptoms from the spring through the summer. Willow, ash, hickory, oak, and walnut are also culprits in the springtime right on through the summer. I live in an area surrounded by woodland so I get pummeled by pollen from all sides.
Today will be a dry and breezy day for most of the area which is not good for allergy sufferers. While many are still wearing masks due to Covid those same masks would be helpful for those who suffer this time of year from pollen outbreaks, personally, I will just take allergy meds 🙄

Forecast Discussion
-- Unsettled weather through Thu with some snowflakes possible -- The beginning of this period will be quiet, with a decent amount of sunshine to start the day. Conditions will only deteriorate through the day with diurnal cloud cover developing by this afternoon, and then a few showers across the central and northern portions of the area this evening. This occurs as the cold pool aloft is sufficient for the diurnal cumulus to develop. Then, the upper low and its short waves will make its way into the area this evening and tonight. The track and position of the upper low will be such to favor the highest chances North, and lowest chances South tonight. The center of the low is then expected to move right across the heart of the area on Wednesday. This will bring a few more instability showers, that will be boosted by short wave energy rotating around the low. It appears that the last main short wave will come through Wed evening. This will bring in cold enough air that some snowflakes will likely mix in, especially over the northern areas. Showers will continue through Thursday, before high pressure builds in for Friday and dries the area out. -- Mainly cool and dry weekend with small chances of showers -- High pressure will push east of the area on Saturday, allowing for a little bit of unsettled weather to be possible for the weekend. Even with the rain chances that will be present, much of the weekend will end up dry at most locations. Much of the more significant short wave energy will miss the area to the South. This scenario will be dictated by a strong trough that dives into the Upper Midwest, and closes off a low. This low should close off to our west, and then dive south of the area. The exact track of this low will determine rain chances, with the southern part of the area seeing the best chance of rain. These situations usually end up seeing the low diving further south, which would take it away from the area more. Right now, the low would be finally moving far enough east that any chances would come to an end temporarily. -- Cool weather holds on early next week with rain chances -- The break in the rain would be short lived, as the next chance would be coming in late Monday and more into Tuesday. We will see another upper trough dropping southeast, and associated cold front pushing through. Right now, the best chance for rain would come with the frontal passage and just behind it next Tuesday.
48* degrees outside nice and warm to keep them pools nice and warm lol…INDY
Frosty and Frezzee advisorys coming in the middle of April?? Stay tuned….INDY
+8.3 degrees through the first 12 days of April. Has there ever been a warmer start than this?
At 12 days this year the mean is 52.7° in 2010 at 12 days it was 54.87 and in 1921 at 12 days it was 52.83. So after 12 days this maybe 3rd warmest start to any recorded April at Grand Rapids. In 2010 April ended with a mean of 53.7 and in 1921 April ended with a mean of 52.7.

I’m watching my beautiful lilac bush come alive peacefully to overcome again by the cold air next week not sure why some always like it so summary so quick in Michigan….We all know it gets cold again!! Poor lilac bush ….INDY
Lilac’s like other plants that are spring flowering seem to do well in cold weather. On Mackinac Island the Lilac’s do not bloom most years until June and they are more like trees than a bush.

Yep those hardy plants can handle a little frost here and there! No temps below freezing in the 10 day, so we should be good!

My poor lilac bush always takes a fall maybe it’s the low lined bed rock of the Grand river that makes it even colder …I can always remember being a kid having beautiful lilacs around the Indy 500 end of May now I’m lucky to have them around my birthday the middle of May ….INDY
It was much worse when we were in Florida. I washed our vehicle when we got down there and the next morning it was orange with thick layer of pollen. Good thing we brought allergy meds.
Yup, allergies have gotten really bad since last week when everything popped open. Nothing is worse than being in a store and getting a sneezing fit with a mask on. Everyone instantly assumes you have the Covid and clears out of the aisle you’re in.
