The World Population & Covid19

Looking at the figures yesterday on the world population I found that there are more than twice as many people now than when I was born in the 1950s.  We have over 7.8 billion humans we share the earth with today of which I am only one.  It kind of sets your perspective of insignificance at a new level.

In demographics, the world population is the total number of humans currently living and was estimated to have reached 7.8 billion people as of this month. It took over 200,000 years of human history for the world’s population to reach 1 billion, and only 200 years more to reach 7 billion.

The world population has experienced continuous growth following the Great Famine of 1315–1317 and the end of the Black Death in 1350 when it was near 370 million.The highest global population growth rates, with increases of over 1.8% per year, occurred between 1955 and 1975 (the baby boomers)—peaking to 2.1% between 1965 and 1970. The growth rate declined to 1.2% between 2010 and 2015 and is projected to decline further in the course of the 21st century. However, the global population is still increasing and is projected to reach about 10 billion in 2050 and more than 11 billion in 2100.

Total annual births were highest in the late 1980s at about 139 million, as of 2011 were expected to remain essentially constant at a level of 135 million,  while deaths numbered 56 million per year and were expected to increase to 80 million per year by 2040. The median age of the world’s population was estimated to be 30.4 years in 2018.  In mid-2019, the United Nations estimated that the world population had reached 7,713,468,000.

The U.S. has now surpassed the other countries in Covid 19 cases including China and India which hold over a third of the world’s population (36%).  This could change as the number of cases changes daily though China seems to be on the downswing in cases.

Michigan is one of the hotspots and a prime location being between Detroit and Chicago.  I am not trying to scare anyone, I am just trying to make everyone understand the importance of the government mandates in regards to staying at home, washing of hands, etc.

I believe we are just beginning our journey through lifechanging and historical events where kindness and understanding are key.  The reset button has been pushed, how we react to our situation will show how we all come out of it.  I don’t believe it will be a quick fix however we will learn a lot in regards to our place in humanity and how susceptible we are to nature beyond our control.

With spring and warmer temps we have our first chances of storms coming in for tomorrow – below is the SPC outlook for Saturday:

A significant severe weather outbreak is possible for portions of the middle Mississippi Valley on Saturday. The threats with the stronger storms include tornadoes, a few which may be significant, large to very large hail, and severe gusts.  We will have a better handle on this tomorrow – the best chance of severe weather at this time should be in the southwestern counties.

Normally this time of year is an exciting time, active weather and thunderstorms. This year the weather has kind of taken a back seat to everything else going on. Being near major city’s like Detroit and Chicago has always been in the back of my mind. Be it a nuclear strike, or like we have now a pandemic, all we can do is hunker down and hope for the best. Stay where you are everyone!

I think that we are entering one of the most intense period since world war 2. I think that this may be for our country much worse than that war. At this time we are still much divided and if we stay this divided the country will have a much harder time making it thru. I feel there are too many in our country that are saying that this will not affect me well to them I hope the best. I think we should spread hope but do not think this will be easy as even at this time we… Read more »

I wish people would realize this effects all of us and not one of us is immune to the consequences of what is going on. I am not trying to be pessimistic here just make people realize some things. Also some things that were important yesterday are not today like golf, sports & etc.and believe me there are things I like too. I have a sister who is a nurse on the other side of the state. She called me this evening to say hi and Happy Birthday. I worry about her getting it. I think and pray we are… Read more »
