The Simple Things of Life

Now is the time to enjoy the simpler things of life.  We have reached a time when I want to switch off the media of TV and radio just to distance myself from the news.  Covid is plastered across all the news now showing very little to celebrate.  I am generally a positive, happy person, however, even I can get depressed with all that is going on from watching all the relentless coverage on TV.

Distancing ourselves from reality isn’t going to make it go away, pretending it is not there or won’t affect you or me doesn’t make it so.  It is a wakeup call that things can go terribly wrong and that we are vulnerable to things we can not see.  It has been long overdue as we became overconfident in our places in this world.

This is one of those things which affect all people regardless of age, race, religious affiliation both rich and poor.  You can not blame God, Allah, Buddha or Vishnu or whatever deity you worship.  I believe in only one God who brings us a message of hope in all of this.  I will not bring forth a sermon at this point as I am saving it for the Easter holiday which explains free will, why bad things happen and God’s plan in all of this.  I have been debating setting up a separate blog on this site for this and prayer requests.

For now, the simpler things of life grant me comfort.  A good book, music, my wife, my pets and enjoying nature are great distractions.  Look for those things which may bring forth a smile, keep a positive attitude that things will get better.

I found out where all the people are going as I watch the traffic on M89.  I went to Meijers to pick up some prescriptions yesterday and saw the parking lot was full at Home Depot.  Apparently lots of people are working on home improvements while they are off work.

Praise to all the people who are working at the stores who are keeping them open for our groceries, etc.  They have many employees wiping everything down with bleach and alcohol, that is all they do.  Thanks and keep up the good work.

Thoughts and prayers to Sandy’s (Hudsonville) brother-in-law who is in the hospital with aspiration pneumonia.

Keep safe, stay at home (if you are allowed) and look for those things to do which will distract you from all the nasty stuff going on these days.

Gov. Whitmer has canceled school for the rest of this year. Our middle schooler is happy, whereas our high schooler is not.

On the weather front. This is from Accweather’s Paul Paskelok in his post today. “It has been a long winter for those who love snow in parts of the Midwest on east. Something that we have been hinting at for a while is the potential for there to be a last hurrah of sorts in the beginning of April. The latest modeling has shifted the storm threat to April 6th and 7th, but with both branches not meeting. The NAO and AO forecasts from the Climate Prediction Center. It is quite interesting since the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) is actually… Read more »

I use my love of nature as one of my distractions and of course part of nature is the weather. Of course one could say that the virus is also part of nature and in a way it is. As MV stated Sandy’s brother in law is in the hospital. And my prayers go out to her and her family.

I hope that is warms up soon too but that may not be the case. There are some hints that we could have some colder then average weather for at least the start of April. Lets hope not.

Your post makes the same points that were made this morning in another that I read on a semi regular basis (a Franciscan priest named Richard Rohr). This morning, he echoed your points on our society’s great strides to squash, cover, or even run from pain and discomfort, and how we seem to have this perception that we should be above it, or don’t deserve to ever experience it. I’ll stop there, in saying that your post is well taken. I hope that you find some peace in your day today, and I wish you and yours good health:)
