Sunny Today – Storm Reports

Once again we received zero rain yesterday as did all of Allegan County.  Storm formation was well east of the county.  Lots of BIG hail reports and heavy rain along with damaging winds were reported in central and eastern Michigan.  Here are the reports for West Michigan and the reports for SE Michigan.

We will have fair weather today with low humidity and comfortable temperatures. Strong north winds will cause 3 to 5-foot waves at the beaches today so it may be best to admire the lake from the beach. Our next chance of rain will come on Sunday.  The hottest weather of the summer will be here by midweek next week with temperatures in the 90s and intolerable humidity possible.

U.S.A and Global Events for July 21st:

1983: At Vostok Station in Antarctica, the temperature dropped to 128.6 degrees below zero. This reading is the coldest temperature ever recorded.

1987: An F4 tornado ravages the Teton Wilderness and Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming. The tornado’s violent winds destroy millions of trees on a 24.3-mile  track that traverses the Continental Divide at an elevation of 10,170 feet.

These are Kyle’s photos from Davison (Genessee County between Flint and Lapeer).  I experienced these back in the early 90s in Allegan.  They trashed all the cars at Perrigos (a couple hundred) plus all the cars in the area including car dealerships.  I had just bought a new truck and it looked like someone took a bat to it.

Forecast Discussion

.SHORT TERM...(Today through Saturday)
Issued at 335 AM EDT Fri Jul 21 2023

- Mix of Clouds and Sun Today

Satellite imagery indicates a fairly low cloud deck over central
Lower Michigan that is moving southward. Based on model RH from
975mb-925mb, most locations erode moisture by 12z or shortly
thereafter. Thus, by mid morning we expect a clearing trend of
these low clouds before some scattered afternoon cumulus develops.

- Low Risk for an Inland Shower Saturday Afternoon

A widely scattered shower is possible on Saturday as weak mid
level troughing moves in during peak heating. Model soundings
reveal a very dry subcloud layer (sfc to 800 mb or so), and with
dew points largely in the mid 50s any showers would be light and
brief it appears. A few rumbles of thunder may be possible inland
given 500-750 J/kg of SBCAPE, but this would likely be the
exception to the rule. Most locations will likely not get wet on
Saturday.

.LONG TERM...(Saturday night through Thursday)
Issued at 335 AM EDT Fri Jul 21 2023

-Successive troughs will bring several chances for convection-

Michigan will be stuck in between two large upper level systems that
will dominate the weather pattern through the weekend and most of
next week. One is a large upper level high pressure system situated
over the four corners. The ridge from this system extends all the
way northward into central Canada. The other system is a large upper
level low situated over Hudson Bay. Troughing between these systems
will downslope through the Great Lakes through the weekend and into
next week. Sunday will see the deepest of these troughs with the
long wave trough extending into the deep south.

Latest models have decent mid level moisture along with a
corresponding mid level trough that should allow for cloud
development. Couple that with a wind shift and frontal boundary
and you have a decent chance for showers and storms Sunday
afternoon. Along with this is some convergence of Q vectors at
850mb. This would further indicate good conditions aloft for storm
development. Best POPS for this timeframe are through northern
lower and extend along the US 127 corridor. Another chance for
showers will come Monday, though the upper level gradient is
divergent and the system seems even more moisture starved,
according to the ensembles, so while precip is possible,
widespread storms seem unlikely.

-Hot and Humid weather will be possible mid to late next week-

The before mentioned ridge will flatten out as the trough is moved
eastward and another low drops southward from Canada as it treks
east. This shift in the upper levels will signal a pattern change as
a warm front will settle over the Great Lakes to Ohio river valley
area. There are questions on location but warm air advection is the
theme from mid week onward. The relatively mild temperatures we have
had will warm into the low 90s past mid week with some ensemble
members near 100. Now those are the outliers however it is a good
indicator of the upcoming pattern shift and an indicator the max
temperatures will be into the low to mid 90s

Davison, Michigan (Genessee County between Flint and Lapeer) was hit extremely hard yesterday. I was on that storm that produced hail up to baseball size. I have so many picture of hail and vehicle damage from yesterday. I’ve never held a hailstone so large in my hand before. Many cars absolutely destroyed and windows blown out. The stoplights in the area also suffered major damage chucks of the yellow plastic were all chipped off them in the road. I wonder if I’ll ever hold hailstones that large again here in MI very rare indeed.

Yea I was very sad to hear this. He’s actually made a few albums the past decade during his Alzheimers. I’m always a big jazz fan, especially on Sunday mornings (I’m a bit old fashioned for my age)

Enjoy the below normal temps while they last, because we will see a brief warm up by the middle of next week! The good news is the heat won’t last long! Wow!

We are back from our trip to Put-in Bay Ohio. We did not have internet were we stayed so there were no post on my part. We had great weather on our trip with temperatures mostly in the low 80’s to upper 70’s there was a lot of smoke on Monday but the rest of the week was great. On the way back we ran into a very heavy rain storm just outside of Lansing. There was some wind and a few small branches were flying around. I did not see any lightning. The rain was gone by the time… Read more »

Good news is most of the area is out of the drought now (abnormally dry). There is still some moderate drought from Kent toward Jackson though. But definitely a huge improvement over the past month!

From Grand Rapids through Michigan and northern Ohio everything looks very green. In parts of Ohio the corn is much taller then here in Michigan.

There ended up being 17,000 outages in the Lansing area yesterday afternoon. The wind was kickin! Some areas got decent rain, some areas not so much. Officially at GR, just 6/100ths of an inch of rain fell and in Lansing, 14/100ths of an inch fell.

We have a nice dry northerly breeze this morning. I opened up the windows and it feels great. Have a fantastic day, friends.

On the way home yesterday we ran into a very heavy rain storm near Lansing there was some wind and a few tree branches flew across 96. On the west side of Lansing there was no rain. Here at my house there was just 0.4″ of rain.
