Springtime!

After a quick shot of snow yesterday morning we recovered nicely to 45° after a low of 16°.  We had 20 inches more snow than last winter and the snow stayed on the ground most of January and all of February.

Now it is time to think of spring and the new growing season and of course lawn mowing which comes sooner than later.  I bought a new John Deere for this year – warning – sticker shock may give you a heart attack.  Just as new cars are out of this world to purchase so has everything else gone up in price due to lack of parts.  There were only three new X330s in all of Allegan and Kalamazoo counties.  Good used cars and trucks are like gold for the same reasons.

NWS Forecast

More in the way of clouds are expected across Central Lower Michigan today, but there will be some sun at times, especially over Southern Lower Michigan. Highs will be reflective of this, remaining in the 40s across Central Lower and rising into the lower 50s along I-94. Look for winds from the southwest at 5 to 15 mph.

Forecast Discussion

- Freezing Rain possible for Tuesday Morning Commute -

After a warm up today, the big forecast question in the next 24
hours is the chance for freezing rain Tuesday morning. A weak
zonal pattern aloft will bring precipitation across northern lower
MI with a warm nose of air out ahead the approaching cold front.
Cold nighttime air at the sfc could allow for ripe conditions for
any precipitation to become freezing. The EC/Canadian have the
precipitation to far north and/or dry through SW Michigan.
GFS/NAM among others has precipitation through the region between
09Z to 12Z. Temperatures at the sfc will be near freezing so if is
a little moist, the dewpoints will move above freezing, making
sure that the precipitation has to be rain. Areas north of I 96
will be cold enough where freezing rain will be possible given the
cold pool at the sfc and the moist air aloft. There isn`t a lot
of moisture so any amounts will be around a hundredth. However
that could cause slick icy roads for the morning commute,
especially on bridges and overpasses.

South of I-96 if any precipitation makes it to the sfc it will
more than likely be rain and very light.

- Mild weather through the week -

A weak ridge will build into the region mid Tuesday through
Wednesday bringing warm air with mild weather into the region. Max
temperatures Wednesday and Thursday will be in the 60s.

- Storm possible at the end of the week -

The question late week will be the track of a large upper level
low that should be positioned over Illinois. This low should bring
a warm front through the region late Thursday night into Friday.
Following this will be a cold front Friday. Currently the low
could track through the Lower Peninsula. However there is some
questions on position and timing so low confidence in that at this
point. So precipitation is possible Thursday night into Friday,
most likely along and south of I 96 but that could change.

This doesn’t have anything to do with the weather but today March 14 is Pie Day.

Seeing lots of low to mid 50’s in Michigan already today! As usual, GR seems to be one of the colder spots in Southern Lower.

I looked up GR versus Detroit. So far GR’s average is 31.1 degrees. Detroit is a full +3.2 degrees warmer for the month. That’s a pretty big difference!

It’s a bit cloudy here, I think that’s why it’s a little cooler. Still really nice out though

Mookie

Whole state looks pretty cloudy today. But that could be the difference for the month. GR is much cloudier than other parts of Michigan.

It happens this time of year nothing new ..But wait to Saturday when we get 6+ inches of wet heavy snow now that will be amazing for this time of year lol…InDY..

While GR is 31.1 so far to the east at Flint they have a mean so far of 30.9 and Saginaw is 29.5. Big Rapids is 26.0.

Yeah those are further north. But I guess Detroit is south of GR as well.

50 degrees with hazy sunshine here. Birds are out full force, but has anyone else noticed many skunks around lately?

We are now approaching the 10 year anniversary of the incredible March 2012 heatwave. That was an absolutely fantastic stretch of weather… although I remember the summer was brutal. I think that is the year when I reached 108 on the car thermometer and the thermometer I put on my driveway reached its peak value of 120 (it wasn’t actually 120, I set it on the asphalt in the sun).

I remember it well. Things were starting to bloom very early and sadly farmers suffered when we got colder again. Summer 2012 was very hot I think it got to 104 in Grand Rapids. I swam in Lake Superior that summer. Then of course the historic winter followed the next year. We had a wild stretch of weather there for a while

I went on one of my first storm chases that year too. It was July 1 ,2012. Severe line of storms with strong winds and small hail from that. That was way down at the state line near Indiana. When I drove back north it was sunny very dry and very hot. Drought was an issue that summer.

Believe it or not here are the some of the first storms I chased. Storm team 8 broadcast from 7/1/12

I think it rained late in July, but yes most of the storms were south of MI in Indiana. Also that drought was pretty bad, I could definitely tell the trees were getting stressed out

Shoot we might get 8 months of warm weather with how the past few years have been! Let’s hope for no snow til Christmas!! I love global warming and I LOVE SPRING!! BRING IT!! Hope Rocky’s 7 month hibernation is enjoyable!

Slim

The overnight low here at my house was 24 the official overnight low at GRR was 27. At this time it is partly cloudy and 38 both here and at GRR. There is just trace amounts of snow left from the snow events this past weekend and that should be all gone this week as we get a good taste of early spring.

Beautiful morning. Currently in Plainwell/Otsego where it’s about 40. Going to be a nice warm day. Been a while since I’ve been to this area. I used to hang out here all the time back when I was in high school.

Speaking of spring time does anyone have any idea or help me with getting hydrangeas to bloom? They are lovely green, but I don’t get any blooms. It would mean a lot to get so blooms this year.

We bought a car this past week(or should I say, we ordered it last November and took possession of it last week), and had to pay MSRP. First time I ever had to do that… I took the dog for a run yesterday at about 9a.m. and it was snowing hard, with a wind chill factor of 7*, and when we got home from NW Grand Rapids last night at 8, it was 37*, and all 3 inches of snow in my yard was gone! With winter now in the rear view, Rocky can finally rest and recover from all… Read more »

I bought a Jeep for $24,900 seven years ago. Just sold it over the weekend to Carvana for $19,000. Can’t believe how strong the used vehicle market is!
