Some Rain and Cooler Today

There has been a lot of discussion about our forecast for this summer.  I have never been one to put much trust in extended forecasts but there are certain clues that can lead us to a reasonable guess.  The forecasted El Niño could mean a hotter summer for much of the country.  Below are the NWS and Farmers Almanac guesses for June, July, and August which would lead me to believe we could see and warm and muggy summer.

U.S.A and Global Events for May 8th:

1784: Deadly hailstorm in South Carolina hits the town of Winnsborough. The hailstones, measuring as much as nine inches in circumference, killed several persons, and a great number of sheep, lambs, and birds.

1902: On May 7th, Martinique’s Mount Pelee began the deadliest volcanic eruption in the 20th century. On this day, the city of Saint Pierre, which some called the Paris of the Caribbean, was virtually wiped off the map. The volcano killed an estimated 30,000 people. 1979: Widespread damage occurred in the Tampa Bay area. The 19 tornadoes reported are the most in one day in Florida history. Three people drowned in Pinellas County where flooding was most severe. Rainfall amounts of 18 inches in 24 hours were reported with 12.73 inches falling at Tampa, FL; with 7.84 inches in just six hours. The worst hit was the Polk County community of Auburndale where a tornado made a direct hit on the Auburndale School. Flying debris hurt only eight students. An 83-year-old woman was killed as she hid in an unreinforced concrete block storage shed. 98 trailers were damaged or destroyed, and 40 people were injured.

2003: This was the second of three consecutive days with strong to violent tornadoes around Oklahoma City. A violent F4 tornado that affected Moore, Oklahoma City, Midwest City, and Choctaw took on a path very similar to the 5/3/1999 devastating tornado. This particular storm back in 2003 affected areas from Newcastle and Moore to Del City and Choctaw. Although over 130 people were injured, there were no fatalities.

2009: A deadly derecho squall line crosses far southern Illinois at midday devastating the Carbondale area on its way across a 1,200-mile swath of terrain covering sections of nine states. Hundreds of homes and businesses are damaged or destroyed in Kansas, Kentucky, Illinois, Kentucky, and Missouri. The wind gusts to 106 mph in the Carbondale area with sustained winds measured at up to 90 mph. In southern Illinois, the storm system peels siding and roofs off homes and other buildings, blowing out car windows and tearing up trailer parks. Click HERE for more information.

Forecast Discussion

- Scattered showers this afternoon and evening -

A consensus of latest CAMs and the 00Z href suggest that dry wx
will continue across our area through at least mid morning.
Scattered rain showers will likely develop around midday through
the afternoon and evening well to the north of the west to east
oriented quasi stationary frontal boundary across northern
IL/IN/OH. An isolated storm is possible south of I-96 later this
afternoon and evening. However the vast majority of convection is
expected to stay south of our area in closer proximity to the
front.

- Fair wx Tuesday through Thursday -

High pressure will bring fair wx Tuesday through Thursday and
large diurnal temperature swings are fcst with a rather dry
airmass in place and mostly clear to partly cloudy skies.
Seasonable temps Tuesday will moderate well into the 70s for highs
Wednesday and Thursday. Fire wx concerns may increase a bit for
mid to late week given increasingly milder temps and low rh
values but fairly weak winds should mitigate these concerns.

- Chance of showers and storms Friday -

SE to south return flow on the back side of the departing ridge
will result in increasing moisture and a chance for rain and
perhaps some convection by Friday. There are some signals in
medium range guidance that one or perhaps several mcs`s will move
ese along a warm frontal boundary over the lower Great Lakes
region by then.

Woah! Detroit hit 81 degrees yesterday. Lansing hit 79. It was a double digit above average kind of day. More coming up this week!

I also do not put much into long range guesses. With that said I do not buy into the idea of a hot and humid summer this year. I may be wrong but I think it could be near average to a little below average. That is not based on anything other than we are over due for a few below average months and we are moving from a La Nina to a El Nino. We shall see.

Remember even a cooler than average summer can have several days well into the 90’s what generally happens is there are more cool days and cool nights than average. We shall see.

With dew points in the mid 60’s and with the official H/L of 77/53 yesterday was the 1st day of 2023 that felt like summer. I know there were days in April that reached into the 80’s but with low dew points it felt much cooler. There was officially 0.41” of rain fall, however in MBY I had much less with just 0.15” There was 41% of possible sunshine. The overnight low here in MBY so far is 52. For today the average H/L is 67/46 the record high of 89 was set in 1926 and the record low of… Read more »
