Snow Totals – Cold Today

Yesterday’s high was at midnight with a temp of 41° the low was 23°, the temp high fell to 18° this morning.  Snowfall for Otsego amounted to a dusting at best.  Below are the snowfall totals for the rest of the area.

Heavy snow fell in north-central Lower Michigan on Sunday and Sunday night, while farther south an early coating of snow and sleet mixed over to rain.

Will we see snow for Christmas?  Not if the guesses from the CPC hold water.  We have a nearly 100% chance of above-normal temps up to the week of Christmas.

Michigan’s temperatures in mid-December are likely to be warmer than normal when all averaged out. In the day-to-day sense, there may still be cold days with snow (more so in northern Michigan), but this pattern would not be favorable to keep snow on the ground for very long. Some days could see high temperatures in the 50s, whereas highs in the mid-30s would be considered normal.

Forecast Discussion

-Lake effect lull today; icy roads this morning

Arrival of surface ridging and lowering moisture depth/inversion
height today results in overall lighter intensity to lake effect
snow. Despite the shallower moisture profiles, the DGZ is still
in the cloud layer with some omega present within it. Scattered
snow showers will therefore linger near/west of Hwy 131, but
additional accumulations should be less than an inch. The cold
temps of 15-20 have helped to create rather icy conditions where
snow accumulations occurred on Monday evening so it may be a slow
commute for some areas this morning.

-Southwest flow lake effect event tonight

The next jet streak/shortwave drops southeast out of Canada
tonight into early Wednesday. Synoptic snow with this feature
expected to be only a dusting, but the arrival of deeper moisture
reinvigorates the lake effect in sw flow regime. Even with warm
advection developing this evening ahead of approaching wave, H8
temps will still be around -12C and 0-2KM theta-e lapse rates go
negative again for a time.

Low level flow from around 230 degrees points toward the best
lake snows occurring from Grand Haven northward tonight,
extending inland into portions of Lake and Newaygo counties. Will
issue a Winter Weather Advisory from 7 PM this evening through
Noon Wednesday for 2-4 inches, with locally higher amounts
near 6" possible where the most intense bands persist.

Some adjustments in headlines may be needed toward the tail end
of the event Wed morning as winds shift more westerly then
northwest with passage of the next cold front. Shortwave will be
lifting out quickly Wednesday afternoon with inversions heights
crashing again, so diminishing trend should ensue.

-Light mix north Thursday

Progressive pattern aloft brings warm advection pattern again for
Thursday; this time with warmer H8 temps. Isentropic lift causes
some light precip to break out, mainly north of I-96. We may be
dealing with some travel impact with this system as well,
especially up near U.S. 10, due to light snow/freezing rain.
Cold/dry air mass should still be present as precip breaks out.

-Warmer with rain to end the week

Active pattern continues to end the week, but milder air moves in
as upper trough dig/evolves over the central United States.
A deepening sfc cyclone is expected to track from Kansas toward
Srn Lwr MI Friday and Friday night, with warm moist flow off the
Gulf yielding over a half inch of rain followed by a period of
snow showers in the cold air on Saturday.

I was out doing some Christmas shopping and while I have around a inch of snow on the ground that is not the case in much of the Grand Rapids area as many locations have just a trace at best and some have mostly bare ground. At this time it is 23 here at my house.

I’m not sure the words “pummeled by snow” would be the words I would use for getting about an inch of snow over the last 24 hours. That’s less than half a tenth an hour. Do we live down South now? Lake effect snow around here just is not what it used to be. Get ready for the December Blowtorch.

We received just a dusting. No problems with the roads either. Very cold wind, though. My biggest concern was our Christmas lights along the eaves. The clips have gotten old and weak over the years, but they are all still attached.

There is just over one inch of snow on the ground here. The road and driveway are snow covered. The overnight low here was 17 and at this time it is still 17 with cloudy skies. The forecast is sure warm for this weekend and if the CPC and the CFSvs are correct it will be very mild for a good part of the rest of the month. As for a white Christmas here at Grand Rapids only 4 of the last 10 Christmases have had a least one inch of snow on the ground. While things could still change… Read more »

We got around an inch last evening from that band that extended through central Kent county, so a bit slippery out with temps in the teens.
