Rising Temps – Weather History

Yesterday we had a cool high temp of 44° and a low of 27°.  It is currently 26° at 5 am.  Today will be a little milder, but clouds will move back in. A rain shower in the late afternoon or evening is possible before steadier light to moderate rain arrives tonight.  We expect a quarter-inch or more from this system.

Forecast Discussion

- Light Rain Late Tonight Into Thursday -

Dry weather will continue early this morning and into this afternoon
while surface high pressure slides east through the region. Clear
skies start off this morning but an approaching low pressure
system to our west in the Plains will filter in mid-level clouds
starting mid-morning.

By this evening a 50-60 knot low level jet will take aim at lower
Michigan allowing for increased moisture advection while a mid-level
trough approaches. Rain chances will increase mainly after 8pm
tonight with the peak rainfall rates occuring between 8pm-2am.
Lingering light rain may persist until 8-10am until the low passes
east and surface ridging moves in place. Widespread showers are
expected with total amounts ranging between 0.2" to 0.4".

- Warm Front Friday Brings Mild Temps and Showers and Storms -

As high pressure returns to the region by Thursday mid-day, quiet
weather will persist Thursday to Friday morning before a warm front
associated with a deepening low lifts north Friday. Lingering
overnight showers and storms from the Mid-Mississippi Valley will
attempt to spread north along the remnants of a lingering low
level jet through the day Friday.

By Saturday the front will be to our north with our area squarely
into the warm sector. Temperatures are expected to warm easily
into the 70s, possibly as high as 80 further south near the I-94
corridor. Areas near the lakeshore will be kept a touch cooler.
Mild temps persist through Saturday night with lows in the 60s
then rebounding with highs back in the 70s Sunday afternoon.

- Cold Front Sweeps through Sunday Afternoon/Evening -

As we sit well into the warm sector Saturday and Sunday, the
associated low pressure system to our northwest will deepen as it
traverses through northern Lake Superior. As this occurs, the
associated cold front will sweep in from the west bringing the
next chance for showers and even a few storms.

Forecast confidence then drops off into the start of next week in
regards to how cold we get following the cold front. Confidence
is strong that we will be back below average (around 62 for late
April for Grand Rapids specifically), but questions remain on how
cold we will get. Both the Euro and GFS ensemble spread increases
considerably starting Sunday evening and beyond specifically in
regards to 500mb heights and 850mb temp trends, thus impacting
forecast temp trends. While specifics are uncertain, there does
seem to be a good consensus that we will be below average once
again.

After a warm March, April has been cooler relative to average. The good news is that April has seen below average snow in GR once again. NWS GR released their season snow totals today which seems to imply that snow is now done. GR’s snow deficit was about a half foot this year.

Bring on the warmup!!

Slim

One year ago far Southern Michigan, Central/Northeast Indiana and northwest Ohio were in for a round of snow. Indianapolis set a record of 2” (old record was a Trace in 1953). Evansville, IN and Paducah, KY had there latest ever measurable snowfall on record that day. 1.3” in Evansville and 0.6” for Paducah. At 4pm it was in the 60s in Paducah then at 7pm it started snowing. Fort Wayne area picked up 4” of snow. I was driving back from Alabama that day and ran into this snow event. After dark roads got slippery so I pulled off at… Read more »

NWS GR’s graphic this morning shows the snowfall totals for the season. Lansing beat Muskegon by 0.10”. Not sure when the last time that happened. GR finished with 71.0” (6.6” below average). Seems like they had more than that. Maybe it’s because it was 25” more than last year.

Rocky (Rockford)
Rocky (Rockford)

Yes GR had a lot more snow than last year and no extended thaws, so it was a great winter for outdoor sports! Simply incredible winter!

Slim

I am not sure how often it has happened my guess is not much, it is now two winters in a row where Lansing reported more snow that Muskegon in the winter season of 2020/21 Lansing reported 45.6″ of snow fall and Muskegon reported 41.8″ That winter Grand Rapids reported just 46.1″
