We have a very warm and moist airmass heading into Michigan. There is a flood watch through 5pm Wednesday for most of the state with perhaps record setting temperature and rainfall amounts. 1 to 3 inches of rain is expected from today through Wednesday morning. Locally higher amounts are likely.
As the Gulf moisture continues to stream this afternoon and evening…the showers will pick up in coverage and intensity. Elevated instability will be around…so will maintain the risk for a few thunderstorms. Fog should be on the increase as well…especially tonight.
We may see temperatures in the 60’s on Tuesday which will more than likely bring a bout of spring fever to many.
A low pressure system developing in eastern Colorado will track northeast through the western Great Lakes Region through Tuesday. Rain showers will be on the increase across the area along with a few thunderstorms. The rainfall will be heavy at times which could lead to some flooding. A large area of high pressure will build in from the west on Wednesday…drying the airmass out here in Michigan.

Fine…”relatively” mild. Plenty of snow remaining in Ada. Spotty snow melt has revealed a 1.5 inch thick sheet of ice across the yard 🙁 (we’ll call it an ice dam…though not on the roof thank goodness)

I generally do not like to talk about records until they are broken but as the forecast for tomorrow mentions “near record warm temperatures” I will toss up the records for February 20th at several locations across southern lower Michigan. The forecasted High in Grand Rapids is near 60° the record is 61° in 1930 but with 1 to 3” of rain forecasted the current record is 1.40” in 1898. Here is a list of the 1. It is interesting that the record highs for Lansing and Muskegon were set just last year.
I noticed that as well. Yet another weather event this Winter that seems to be a repeat of last year, and once again the exact same days. Second year in a row now with thunderstorms in January and February. Rare occurrence to happen once, but two years in a row??
Not sure how often thunderstorms with happen in December, January, February. I know they do happen in March. I also know that when I lived on the east side of the state thundersnow was much more prevalent that it has been since I moved to the west side of the state.
