Rain South – Dry North

We have light rain falling in Otsego at 5 am with a temp of 49°.  I have .12 of an inch in the rain gauge.  Our high for yesterday was 60°  and the low was 38°.  Rain has moved as far north as Grand Rapids this morning, areas to the north will see little or no rain today.  Those areas north of Grand Rapids will see a Fire Weather Watch kick in at 8 am due to low humidity and winds from the east at 20 mph gusting to 30 mph.  We are still on track for a warm and sunny Mothers Day weekend with temps in the 60s, beyond that our warming tend to summer-like conditions next week.

Forecast Discussion

- Showers Across Southern MI Tonight Through Friday Night -

Rgnl IR sat trends early this morning suggest mid to high level
clouds will continue to increase from the west today. A consensus
of latest high res guidance such as the latest runs of the HRRR
and 3km nam suggest dry wx will prevail thru this aftn before
showers develop over our southern fcst area this evening.

This notion seems very reasonable since dry east winds will
inhibit pcpn from developing until tonight as fcst soundings
finally show deeper moisture moving into far southern MI.
Meanwhile further north across central MI fcst soundings look
quite dry and we expect very little if any rainfall across our
northern counties through Friday.

The low pressure system will continue to move east across the
lower OH valley region Friday night bringing showers to our
southern fcst area with dry conditions continuing north of I-96.

- Fair Wx This Weekend Then Very Warm And Dry Next Week -

A ridge of high pressure over the northern Great Lakes region will
bring fair wx with seasonably temps this weekend. Then we continue
to expect a significant wx pattern change next week. Persistent
southerly flow and upper level ridging will result in temps
reaching around 10 to 15 degrees above normal next week. High
temps from Tuesday through Friday should easily reach the upper
70s to mid 80s. The evolution of the sfc/upper level pattern for
next week also suggests predominantly dry wx for our area.

I think it warmed up to 61 here today. Beautiful sunset tonight. I think we are all going to love the forecast for next week.

Today was another below normal temp day! Incredible!

Slim

Light rain is still falling here and the current temperature is stuck at 51. Officially at GRR there is light rain falling and they are reporting a temp of 49. You do not have to go very far to the north to find clear skies as it is clear at Big Rapids and north. It also warmer to the north today and at Ironwood it is even in the low 60’s with clear s sky.

Off and on light rain this morning. The sun came out here earlier and temp jumped quickly. 63 here currently.

It was another horrible Spring weather day! We have only had a handful of excellent Spring days! Wow, just wow!

Slim

Yesterday was yet another cool day. The official H/L at Grand Rapids was 59/40. The overnight low here in MBY was 50 and at the current time there is light rain falling and I have a reading of 51. After what looks to be a nice spring weekend it still looks like we swing into some summer like weather. The current forecasted highs in the upper 70’s to low 80’s will be very welcomed. While at the current time spring growth is behind schedule we will catch up rapidly next week. While the highs next week will be well above… Read more »

A common definition Bill Steffen uses for a heat wave is 3+ days of 90 or warmer. Of course this is not an “official” definition. I could see the argument that a whole week of highs 15 degrees above average could be considered a heat wave. A heat wave doesn’t have to be only 90+. For example, the week of 60s in February in 2017 is considered a heat wave to me.
When I think of blow torch I think 100+. No official definition for this either.

Slim

Here is NOAA’s definition of Heat Wave. “A period of abnormally and uncomfortably hot and unusually humid weather. Typically a heat wave lasts two or more days” I would think that Bill Steffen’s is good for a heat wave here in lower Michigan. Down south even using 90 would not work and for there it could be upper 90’s with very high DP’s Under this definition the week of 60’s in February would not be considered a Heat Wave but more likely a week on very nice February weather. Unless one is a snowman then the 60’s would indeed be… Read more »

IMO, NOAA’s definition seems a bit vague. What may be uncomfortable for some, may not be uncomfortable to others. “Unusally humid?” Do they track the average humidity?

I completly agree with your final sentence, Slim.

Now THIS is a heat wave:

I just ran a couple errands and surprise it is cold, cloudy, wet, dreary and windy! What another horrendous Spring day! Bring on the sun and warm temps because this is getting ridiculous! One saving grace is the fact that Rock n Roll will never die, so crank up the radio and let the weekend party begin!

Bring on a stretch of warm dry weather! Incredible!
