Rain Departing

Many areas saw beneficial rain overnight, but not so much here in Otsego where my rain gauge held only a meager .08 of an inch.  Morning fog will burn off leaving partly sunny skies. Isolated thunderstorms are possible this afternoon, mainly east of US-131. Highs in the low to mid-80s are expected today.  Our next chance of rain will come early Saturday morning.

U.S.A and Global Events for July 6th:

1893: A violent tornado killed 71 persons on its forty-mile track across northwestern Iowa. Forty-nine persons were killed around Pomeroy, where eighty percent of the buildings were destroyed, with most leveled to the ground. Click HERE for more information.

1928: A seven-inch hailstone weighing 1.5 pounds fell in Potter Nebraska. With a circumference of 17 inches, this appeared to be the largest hailstone in the world at that time.

1986: Thunderstorms during the mid-morning hours, and again during the evening, produced significant flash flooding at Leavenworth, Kansas. The official rainfall total was 10.37 inches, but unofficial totals exceeded twelve inches. At nearby Kansas City, the rainfall total of 5.08 inches was a daily record for July.

Forecast Discussion

.SHORT TERM...(Today through Friday)
Issued at 350 AM EDT Thu Jul 6 2023

MCV which brought more beneficial /locally heavy/ rain to much of
the area is departing to the northeast early this morning with
only isolated showers lingering behind it. Sfc cold front
currently sliding through the area will continue moving slowly
east today but sfc troughing/convergence is shown to persist in
its wake this afternoon especially over ern Lwr MI. Also the
primary H5 shortwave trough will be swinging in from the west so
as sfc instability rebuilds would expect to see a few additional
showers/storm popping up by afternoon.

Sfc based capes recover to 1000-1500 J/KG by Noon and primary
risk for new showers and storms will be between Noon and 5 PM
mainly near and east of Highway 131 and especially toward U.S
127. Meanwhile northwest winds off Lk MI will keep areas west of
Hwy 131 cooler/stable this afternoon, so PoPs falling off below 10
percent for the lakeshore counties.

Best deep layer shear of 35 kts or more lags slightly behind the
renewed scattered convection this afternoon but still cannot rule
out a few stronger cells with gusty winds and heavy downpours
before convective threat ends later today. Cooler high temps
around 80 are in store today although still rather humid with
dew pts of 65-70 hanging on.

Much drier air mass arrives tonight with dew points dropping into
the 50s and PWATs falling below 0.75 inches. Clearing skies and
more comfortable conditions can be expected as sfc high builds in
from the west. Friday looks like a stellar summer day with sfc
high pressure leading to light winds, sunny skies and pleasant
humidity levels with highs around 80.

.LONG TERM...(Friday night through Wednesday)
Issued at 350 AM EDT Thu Jul 6 2023

-- Scattered showers and storms Friday night into Saturday --

No change to expectations stated in the previous discussion. For the
last few runs of the ECWMF ensemble (ECE) we have seen steady growth
in the number of precipitating members, especially for the southern
forecast area. Some deterministic models such as the GFDL C-SHiELD
CAM more specifically depict a decaying MCS entering our forecast
area Friday night as a result of the mid-level forcing mentioned in
the previous discussion. I suspect that precipitation chances will
continue to grow Friday night and carry over into Saturday with an
attendant thunder risk.

Regarding Saturday, SPC gives our forecast area a Marginal Risk for
severe convection in their most recent Day 3 outlook. Part of this
may be related to a recent, very aggressive NAM forecast. Obviously,
we will need to continue monitoring the risks associated with this
time frame.

-- Tentatively dry for Sunday --

We are going with a dry forecast for Sunday, but the persistent and
careful reader of our forecast discussions will notice a variety of
expectations for the coming weekend; this belies the poor
predictability that has plagued this part of the forecast for quite
a while now.

-- Unsettled next week, best rain chances Monday night and Tuesday --

Guidance now suggests that the Hudson Bay low I`ve mentioned in the
past will shift to southern Ontario and be quite wobbly. This offers
multiple opportunities of upper PV forcing in relatively close
proximity to our forecast area. ECE and CMC guidance does indicate
enhanced precipitation chances Monday night and Tuesday with a cold
frontal passage (fropa); this fropa is slightly later than previous
thinking. But again, we are dealing with a lot of moving targets in
general when it comes to timing.

As was said before, no major temperature swings should be expected
next week as long as the low hangs around. In fact, temperatures
ought to remain quite close to climatological normals.

Hey we finally had our biggest rainfall in over 2 months, measuring in at 0.79”! That’s close to the total amount we’ve had here since around May 1. I think the corn out back shot up a foot overnight. Still awfully humid out again today.

Our tomato plants did the same. I couldn’t get over how much taller they were today.

It’s interesting the text explanation fails to mention anything about Michigan. But I agree with the map, it’s hard to get out of a drought. Rain has finally come back, but as we know it is very spotty. Some areas got 6+” and others less than an inch. If this pattern continues though I suspect the drought will universally improve and crops will be alright. There’s already losses in yield due to germination and stress, but hopefully the plants that made it will be fine.

I picked up another inch of rain last night! 7 inches in less than 2 weeks! The rain can slow down as far as I am concerned!!

The official H/L at Grand Rapids yesterday was 91/67 up to midnight 0.35” of rain fell. Here in MBY I recorded 0.72” of rain fall. For today the average H/L is 83/62 the record high of 104 was set in 2012 (I had 108 here in MBY that day) the record low of 41 was set in 1983. Last year the H/L was 78/64 and there was 0.22” of rain fall.

Well, our losing streak for Tiger games is still intact. They got beat real bad last night. It was a warm night at the ballpark with the temperature in Detroit of 92. On the trip over the temperature started out a 87 here in GR and it was 90 on the west side of Lansing and of course it was 92 in Detroit. Boy there is a lot of construction going on in Detroit and I 696 was really backed up. The ramp to M10 was closed so had to go all the way to Woodward. On the way back… Read more »

We had some close lightning strikes last night and a decent amount of rain here. Currently cloudy again and fairly humid. It’ll be interesting to see the drought update at 8:30… the rain last night isn’t accounted for, for we will see

There was a lot more lightning in the Lansing area on the way home last night then here in GR
