Finally had some weather to keep us interested last night. There was a possible tornado in Colon the NWS will verify later today. I was watching activity on Radarscope in the Chicago area where there were several tornados reported on the ground. Tornadoes were spotted at both O’Hare Airport and Midway Airport. Both airports halted air traffic.
I was also watching some rotation on Radarscope to the west of my location, we ended up with just heavy rain and a bit of wind. We received .79 of an inch which is the most we have had on a day since April 5. We now have 2.24 inches since June 1st and 1.40 inches for July thus far.
The weather today will start out much quieter than how Wednesday finished up. Temperatures will remain mild with highs in the 70s. A few showers and storms could pop up this afternoon inland from Lake Michigan. More widespread showers and storms will be likely late Friday night into Saturday.
U.S.A and Global Events for July 13th:
1895: A tornado that began in Cherry Hill, New Jersey made its way to Woodhaven and Long Island in New York.
1951: Rivers across eastern Kansas crest well above flood stage, causing the most significant destruction from flooding in the Midwestern United States at that time. Five-hundred-thousand people were left homeless, and 24 people died in the disaster.

Forecast Discussion
.SHORT TERM...(Today through Friday) Issued at 323 AM EDT Thu Jul 13 2023 Upper low across central Canada combined with a subtropical ridge across the southern CONUS will keep the Great Lakes in a fast west to northwest flow regime through the near term and beyond. Today we will be between shortwave troughs with generally fair weather. Only slight chance POPs for this afternoon in the eastern forecast area as moisture and instability are both limited. Any isolated showers that do develop should diminish by sundown with loss of sfc heating. On Friday, showers will become more widespread as a shortwave trough approaches and moisture pools ahead of an advancing cold front. It still looks like the bulk of the rain should fall Friday night, but chance POPs are warranted across most of the CWA on Friday afternoon given well developed warm advection pattern and precipitable water values already over 1.5 inches. Thunderstorms are possible as well with negative LIs and at least elevated instability sufficient to maintain deep updrafts. Deep layer shear of 30 knots or more is shown in both the GFS and NAM Friday afternoon so this will have to be watched closely for severe weather potential as well. .LONG TERM...(Friday Night through Thursday) Issued at 323 AM EDT Thu Jul 13 2023 No real change to the general forecast for the period from Friday night and beyond. We are looking at periodic chances for showers and storms, with temperatures mainly near to slightly below average for this time of the year. This will be the case as upper heights across Canada will be a bit on the low side, and we will be closer to the upper jet. This pattern will bring occasional short waves through the area, which will support the shower/storm chances. There is a better chance for showers and storms late Friday night and Saturday. We will see a trough axis take shape over the Mid- Mississippi Valley by daybreak Saturday morning. Ahead of this wave, forcing will ramp up over the area, and a surge of warm and moist air will stream in over the area. This supports the potential of a decent amount of instability building with a short wave and sfc low moving through during the early afternoon hours. If we can realize the forecast amount of instability to go along with the short wave and mid level winds, some severe weather will be possible. The air will cool down a little bit behind the short wave and sfc low that pass through the area on Saturday. The flow will remain somewhat cyclonic with the long wave trough aloft over the area. Additional short waves are forecast to come through, and will keep the chance of showers/storms in for the area. This trough will remain over the area likely for Sunday through Tuesday, keeping a chance of rain in for the forecast. It does look like the long wave troughing may slip east, and allow the rain chances to no be as great for Wednesday and beyond. This would allow for temperatures to warm back up to average to slightly above average levels.
Today was yet another below normal temp day and yes we are well on our way to a below normal temp month and summer! Who would have thought?

I am mowing 2 times per week!
ADA – Frustrating…I thought we received plenty of rain yesterday. Gauges showing only .80 this morning.
Yes that is on the low side and way less than I received!
1.65 in of rain here in Comstock Park. My rain barrels are full for the first time this summer.
Watching radar last night it was obvious most of the rain was north of Kazoo County. I recorded 0.35 inches last night so the drought in my area continues.
The drought update today won’t take into account last nights rain. But it seems like areas in the “severe” drought got a decent soaking. Definitely an exciting evening for once
Well over 3” of rain at my house! Incredible!
Looks like the community of Colon may have had a tornado last night down in St. Joseph County. We will find out later with the storm survey.
I would think that a tornado will be confirmed. Like I said last night, there was a clear debris ball on the radar for several minutes.
We got exactly 2”. I am happy with that. My pond completely filled too.
As Michael said above, FINALLY some weather. The storm of the year so far. Three inches of rain here. We had a severe thunderstorm warning just after midnight. 60+ mph winds. At one point, we thought our young tree out back was going to snap. Exciting evening for southern Michigan and NE Illinois. Several road closures around the capital city this morning due to flooding.
There was rotation in Eaton County west of Lansing and south of my house last night. At one point it looked pretty decent but never fully tightened up but it wouldn’t have taken much more. A very active evening.
My wife said that she thought she saw some rotation in the clouds overhead amongst the flashes of lightning.
The heavy rain yesterday set a new record rain fall at Grand Rapids with the official amount of 1.68” Here in MBY I recorded 2.23” At Lansing they reported a new record amount of 2.95”. The official H/L at GRR was 77/57 and there was 31% of possible sunshine the peak wind gust at GRR was 34 MPH out of the NE. For today the average H/L is 83/63 the record is the all time high of 108 set in 1936. The record low of 46 was set in 1898 there has only been 2 times with it has gotten… Read more »
There were several reports of flooding in Kent county and to our south there were some reports of funnel cloud sightings. Did not see any major damage reports. There were some reports of people getting rescued from their cars. Here in MBY there was just heavy rain fall with a couple of flashes of lightning and a rumble of thunder. I recorded a total of 2.23” of rain fall. The next week looks to be near average for the most part with highs in the upper 70’s to low 80’s with a few chances of showers.
Slim
I would imagine all of lower Michigan received over a inch of rain last night the drought is on its way out as ws have more rain and cooler temperatures straight ahead the word Fall comes to mind and I love it!! INDY
Well not everyone. If you read MVs post above he stated he had 0.78”.
Some areas got much more than others. Official Lansing recorded 2.95″ of rain fall here in my yard I had 2.23″ there were several other reports of over 2″ and of course other areas got much less. There was not much wind here in my area and just a few flashes of lightning and a few rumbles of thunder.

1.8″ inches at my house just east of Hamilton last night…
