Quiet Weather Pattern Continues

Our last total lunar eclipse for three years is ending this morning at 7:05 am.

Yesterday’s high in Otsego was 52° and the low was 32°.

We have all the yard work for the season completed so I went ahead and got the snow blade installed on my lawn tractor and the snow blower now receives its prominent place in the front of the shed.  The second shed is where the tractor lives, I had to reinforce the joists and floor to accept its weight.  I suppose it is time to think about getting the outside Christmas lights up on the house, one of my less fun activities along with cleaning and covering the fish pond for the winter.

Dry weather is forecast through midweek along with a moderating trend of temperatures. Some sites could reach 70 degrees by Thursday. A cold front tracks through Friday. Unsettled and much colder weather is forecast for next weekend with some snow showers, some accumulation is possible.  If you have any yard work to get done now is a good time to do it.

Don’t forget to get out to vote today.  It is nice this election cycle is coming to an end, I won’t miss all the annoying candidate ads on TV.

Forecast Discussion

-- Today --

For the lunar eclipse this morning (totality between 517 and 642 AM,
then partial through moonset/sunrise after 7 AM), patches of
altostratus clouds may obscure the moon from time to time, but
viewing conditions should be reasonably good for much of the area
according to the HREF.

As the center of surface high pressure scoots by to our north, a mix
of sun and clouds is expected with near-normal temperatures. Some
low-level clouds from Lake Huron may drift into parts of central
lower Michigan, while a layer of thin altostratus and a layer of
cirrus stream in from the west.

-- Midweek warmup --

Our region`s tendency for warmth over almost the past three weeks
will conclude with one more run toward 70 degrees on Thursday. This
is as warm low-level air is advected toward the Great Lakes from the
southern US, between sprawling high pressure off the Atlantic coast
and low pressure over Minnesota/Wisconsin. 70 degrees on or after
November 10 is an uncommon feat, as our threaded climate sites with
records over 120 years have only recorded instances of this between
10 and 19 times. Daily high temperature records for November 10,
however, may be out of reach given 2020`s impressive run into the
mid 70s.

-- Late Week Turn Toward Winter Conditions --

The spread in the global model ensembles is remarkably low for
temperatures for about the next week, increasing our confidence in
that aspect of the forecast. After cold frontal passage early
Friday, 850 mb temperatures drop at least 15 degrees C in 24 hours.
Temperatures will probably fall during the day on Friday. Light rain
may fall from mid-level moisture above the cold front, while greater
moisture and lift favoring heavier rain north of (sub)tropical
storm Nicole will likely be focused just east of Michigan toward
New York and New England.

Heading deep into the core of cold low-level air underneath the
upper-level low over the weekend, expect increasing inversion
heights to above the DGZ, and favorable moisture and lake-enhanced
instability, which would favor snow showers in northwest flow.
Accumulations in parts of the area are a decent bet, and impacts to
pavement conditions (slush or melting snow freezing to ice) can`t be
ruled out especially Saturday night into Sunday morning.

I live in a very rural area and our polling location is also in the middle of nowhere and was lined up outside this morning. Good to see.

Great weather statewide today for voting. Hopefully everyone goes out to vote. I’ve participated in every election since I first had the chance to and don’t see myself ever missing an election. One of the most important things we can do as citizens.

Happy Election Day! Looks like we have 3 more nice days before we enter the “second half of fall”, which is the colder/cloudier part. The good news is we are just over 3.5 months away from March

Political ads should be banned on all platform! Total waste of money and a lot of corrupt money is behind them! In fact all donations to political campaigns and candidates should be banned! All politicians should work for us, but their sole goal is to stay in power and greed! I have already voted and I hope to God we do not elect any conspiracy theory election deniers to office!

Michael,
Agree with you about the commercials, even youngest kiddo was counting down that says until that commercials would be gone off all platforms. Lol.

Have a good day everyone!!!

While yesterday was the coolest day so far this November it was still above average. The official H/L at Grand Rapids was 52/36. There was no rain fall and 100% of possible sunshine. The overnight low here in MBY reached 32 but has now got up to 37 with some clouds. It looks like the official overnight low at GRR was 34. For today the average H/L is 51/35 the record high of 74 was in 2020 and the record low of 16 was in 1976 and again in 1991. The most snow fall of 7.5” was in 1921. The… Read more »

I woke early this morning hoping to get a glimpse of the lunar eclipse. Very cloudy here, unfortunately.

I joked with my mail carrier the other day. I told her that I voted several weeks ago so she could discontinue delivering piles of campaign mailings. She said that they couldn’t wait until Election Day either.

Slim

Yes, I too have already voted and will be glad to see an end to the mailings and ads and text messages for a while.

Looks like we may be turning the ground white this weekend for some places. First real taste of winter!
