We are looking at another storm coming into the area this weekend and I wonder which adverb to attach to this one. It is possible (perhaps, used to indicate doubt or hesitancy) we could see 6 inches of wet snow or probably (almost certainly; as far as one knows or can tell) another hit or miss wet system which may or may not give us fits trying to predict what, when and where rain and snow could fall.
For snow lovers, this may be a disappointment, like having the expectation of getting a new car for Christmas and receiving a box of rocks – or the dread of expecting another tie or pair of socks and getting a Hummer with all the options.
Whether one looks at this with dread or excitement preparation is the key and sometimes neutrality is the best way to approach the forecast. What happens is beyond our control and it is best to proceed with caution being prepared for the worse without disappointment should it all avoid us.
That said here is the forecast as of now from the NWS.
Not much change to the model guidance on the evolution of the storm over the weekend. We are thinking a general 3 to 5 inch event with most of that falling Friday night in a pattern of strong warm advection/isentropic ascent followed by a period on Saturday of rain or mixed precipitation as the sfc low tracks across the forecast area. We could be dry slotted part of Saturday with snow on the backside transitioning to lake effect snow showers Saturday evening. Strong cold advection and pressure gradient could result in blowing snow as temperatures plummet. Lake effect snow showers will continue through Sunday in west to northwest flow, but the DGZ crashes to surface which will limit accums to probably the 1 to 3 inch range with some locally 3 to 5 inch amounts across Ottawa and Allegan Counties. Lake effect snow showers will taper off and end on Monday as sfc ridging builds in with drying and subsidence.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see a WWA or warning being put in place later today which is a good probability with the possibility of a nasty wet system for this weekend. We just have to keep an eye on the radar and upper air patterns to follow the path of the storm to see where it will lead…

The nws is gun shy based on last weeks debacle! This should be a warning!
After last weekends “Winter Storm Not!” I would think that many of the NWS offices will be a little more cautious (maybe) in handing out their headlines. But then if the weather is bad or good do we really need to be “warned?” or “advised” for that matter?

Yes and that is the purpose of the nws and our tax dollars. To alert the public of hazardous and dangerous conditions! So yes this is their job! If they are not going to that then get rid of the entire service!
To most people, there is no difference between a WWA and WSW. The masses have been put on notice, and that’s good enough.
Then why have different levels – advisory, warnings, blizzards, special weather statements, etc. It is their system so they need to start using it correctly!

Great news! All of the teleconnectors point towards an increase of cold and snow over the next few weeks! Next week after a brief and minimal warm up we trend back to normal to slightly below normal and tons of snow chances! I absolutely love it!

the south, in our southern two rows including I-94 the snow will

I have been making changes and updates the past couple of days, most behind the curtain. The whole site is now secure and safe. Also made a new logo, perhaps a bit large, I may scale it down at a later date.

I like the design of your site. I took a web design class a couple semesters ago and I was always horrible at formatting the web pages!
Some of it requires hard coding with HTML and java – most sites have thousands of lines of code to go through when things need adjustments or to fix things when they go haywire. Not all of it is cut and paste….
Light dusting so far here. Big question is will we get enough to finally reach the benchmark milestone of 1 whole inch for January now that we’re almost 3 weeks in? Hilarious!

Speaking of cloudy weather, are there any astronomy buffs in the group? It’s been a pretty lousy winter for stargazing…
I am big into astronomy, and yes this time of year is generally the worst for seeing anything with all the clouds we always have.
Doesn’t look like a huge snowstorm this weekend but certainly bigger than anything we’ve seen around these parts in a long time. And I’m still not seeing any major arctic air (the new warmer CPC agrees).
