Near Record Warmth

Yesterday we had 79° in Otsego and have another similar day in store with temperatures pushing to near 80° or better.  Warm and dry air with a daytime breeze will increase the chance of fires spreading out of control today. Temperatures through Saturday will be well above average, then a cool down is expected early next week with chances for precipitation increasing.

U.S.A and Global Events for April 13th:

1999: A two-mile-wide area of wind-driven hail pounded residences and farm equipment for about a 5-mile stretch at least as far as State Highway 158 in west Texas near Midland/Odessa. Hail grew up to about golf ball size and winds peaked at approximately 80 mph. The wind-driven hail broke windows in houses and blasted the paint off the wooden siding. The strong winds took roofs off several mobile homes and at least one single-family house. Utility crews stated that the winds downed a total of 27 poles. The American Red Cross determined that 324 units were affected with 18 mobile homes and four houses destroyed. About 50-60 families were at least temporarily displaced.

2006: An F2 tornado hit Iowa City, Iowa, and trekked across other Southeast parts of the University of Iowa campus doing 15+ million dollars in damage hurting 30 people, and damaging or destroying 1051 buildings. The roof/steeple/ bricks fell from the St. Patrick’s Church shortly after 75 parishioners had taken to the rectory basement next door.

Forecast Discussion

...Near record warmth and dry through Friday...

Not much change to the forecast in the near term. If there are any
concerns, it deals with fire weather; a decent sized wildfire
developed in Allegan County yesterday. Conditions are similar today
compared to yesterday vis a vis temperatures and relative humidity.
Today`s winds will be a bit lower, however.

Highs will make a run at records in Grand Rapids and Muskegon today;
see the Climate section below.

The dome of high pressure aloft will remain in place through Friday,
which means the very warm conditions will continue with highs again
around 80.

...Chance of showers/storms Saturday afternoon and night...

As the upper ridge drifts east, a deep upper low will begin to cut
off over the Mississippi Valley. Surface cyclogenesis will be
ongoing Friday night over the eastern Plains and upper MS Valley.
Recent model trends have been to slow down the eastward progression
of the low, which in turn delays the development of showers and
possible thunderstorms until later Saturday...perhaps Saturday
night. Thus PoPs have been cut back a tad Saturday afternoon. That
said, the ECMWF does show a pseudo warm front extending from near
Muskegon southeast to Ann Arbor Saturday afternoon and develops some
weak echos during the afternoon, which is why we won`t eliminate
PoPs altogether.

The best chance of showers/storms will come Saturday night
along/behind the cold front. Highest instability arrives 04z-14z
Sunday. After 14z or so, the cold front moves through and that`ll
put an end to temperatures in the 70s. H8 temps will fall from +4c
Saturday night to -4c Sunday night and -6c by Monday afternoon.

Models show quite a bit of precipitation wrapping around the low as
it moves through. Sunday looks rainy with snow mixing in Sunday
night and Monday. Monday is going to feel cold with highs around 40
and winds gusting over 30 MPH.

Cold weather doesn`t stick around long this time of year and next
week will be no different. The upper low will move east Tuesday and
warm advection will be underway. H8 temps will rise to +8c by
Wednesday pushing surface temperatures into the 60s again.

Will it even hit 40 degrees on Monday? With some snow and 30 to 40 MPH winds it will be a very cold Spring day! Get ready!

Anyone see the rain Ft. Lauderdale Florida got? Holy cow. They said 7 months worth of rain came in just 7 hours.

Mark (East Lansing)

Bit too warm for me today. There was a breeze yesterday, but today feels much warmer.

Slim

This weather is great. I call this the “don’t have too weather” That is don’t have to have the air on and don’t have to have the heat on.
Slim

Slim

This is great weather nice and warm with low Dew Points. So no it is not too hot.

I think I am still used to the cool weather. 80 normally is not too hot for me, but I think when it is this early in the season, I am not adapted yet

I need help from all the pet (dog owners) out there. We don’t let our dogs wander in the woods, but we have already picked a handful of ticks off the dogs crawling on them). What do you do besides the vet meds to help prevent this? Thanks for your help.

Mark (East Lansing)
Mark (East Lansing)

I’m with MV. We use the meds from the vet.

Thanks MV and Mark. We do too. But the little bugs keep finding ours. We are due to give ours their monthly”treat” in the next few days.
Just FYI…don’t know if you guys have a Sam’s club membership, but our flea med (the all in one) is cheaper there than the vet!! It is like $40 or more depending on your membership. I called and asked the pharmacist.

I saw a report that today will be the 8th straight 100% sunshine day in SE Michigan. Similar in West Michigan I would believe. Incredible!

We had a record low highs in GR, Lansing, Muskegon, and Holland yesterday. GR broke the old record from 1945 by 3 degrees!

Slim

Thanks for that update. The last few mornings have been warmer at the airport then here in MBY. Must be the “heat island” effect.

According to The Weather Channel, as of March 31st, Michigan was having a top 3 warmest start to the year. And that was before this warm April!

The record snow fall for Monday is 1.4″ in 2018. While today will be one of the warmest for any April 13. The forecasted high for Monday would be one of the coldest for any April 17.
Slim

Nathan (Forest Hills)
Nathan (Forest Hills)

It will probably be in the mid to upper 30s Monday. Combined with the relatively warm ground temps, I don’t think much snow will stick. Maybe we will see some on the grass and trees

Slim

If the high on Monday is in the upper 30’s that would be one of the coldest for any April 17 on record. As for snow fall going back to 1893 it has only snowed in 18 years on April 17 and that including years with just a trace. So if it indeed snows at all on Monday that would be “rare”
