I’m not too fond of temperatures much above 75° (I am heat intolerant), but hey, with the low humidity it hasn’t been too much to complain about and it’s not about me anyway as most like the warmer temperatures. Yesterday we reached 83° with a morning low of 50.5°. Today we can expect much of the same with mostly sunny skies and highs in the low 80s inland.
...Air Quality Alert for Friday April 14th... The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy has declared Friday April 14th to be an Action Day for elevated levels of ozone. Pollutants are expected to be in the unhealthy for sensitive groups range. The Action Day is in effect for the following Michigan counties... Mason, Oceana, Muskegon, Ottawa, Kent, Allegan, and Van Buren People and businesses are urged to avoid activities which lead to ozone formation. These activities include refueling vehicles or topping off when refueling, using gasoline powered lawn equipment, and using charcoal lighter fluid. Positive activities include car pooling, biking to work, delaying or combining errands, and using water based paints. It is recommended that active children and adults, and persons with respiratory diseases such as asthma, limit prolonged outdoor exertion.
U.S.A and Global Events for April 14th:
1886: The deadliest tornado in Minnesota history razed parts of St. Cloud and Sauk Rapids, leaving 72 dead and 213 injured. 11 members of a wedding party were killed including the bride and groom. The bottom of the Mississippi River was seen during the tornado’s crossing. Click HERE for more information from the StarTribune.
1912: On her maiden voyage, the RMS Titanic rammed into an iceberg just before midnight. The “unsinkable ship” sank two hours and forty minutes later into the icy water of the Atlantic Ocean near Newfoundland, Canada. Tragically, 1,517 passengers including the crew were lost. A nearby ship, the Carpathia, rushed to the Titanic and was able to save 706 people.
1922: The Mississippi River reached a record height of 21.3 feet at New Orleans, Louisiana, and the river was still rising, with the crest still a week away. Understandably, the City of New Orleans was nervous as reports of levees failing upriver reached the city. A crevasse below New Orleans would relieve the pressure on the town’s strained levees on the 27th, sparing the city from disaster.
1935: Black Sunday refers to a particularly severe dust storm that occurred on April 14, 1935, as part of the Dust Bowl. During the afternoon, the residents of the Plains States were forced to take cover as a dust storm, or “black blizzard,” blew through the region. The storm hit the Oklahoma Panhandle and Northwestern Oklahoma first and moved south for the remainder of the day. It hit Beaver around 4:00 p.m., Boise City around 5:15 p.m., and Amarillo, Texas, at 7:20 p.m. The conditions were the most severe in the Oklahoma and Texas panhandles, but the storm’s effects were felt in other surrounding areas.
1999: In Sydney, Australia, a hailstorm caused $1.6 billion in damage, making it the costliest hailstorm to strike a populated city in the country. The hail damaged some 22,000 homes and more than 60,000 vehicles. Also, aircraft damage at Sydney Airport was extensive.

Forecast Discussion
...Warm and dry today... Not much change to the going forecast. High pressure overhead will result in light winds today and continued near-record high temperatures...see the Climate section. The light winds will likely contribute to a stagnant airmass. An Air Quality Alert is in effect today for the lake shore counties plus Kent County. Based on current satellite imagery, we`re likely to see a bit more cirrus today compared the the past couple of days, but that won`t do much keep temperatures at bay. We`ll see highs in the 80s across the cwa today. Saturday will be similar today as the trend in the models to delay the cold front continues. the 3km Nam shows a brief window around 00z Sunday when a couple of showers may develop, but the bulk of the precipitation looks like it will hold off until Sunday when the front moves through. ...Wet and turning colder Sunday/Monday... The models show quite a bit of wrap-around moisture with this system. Initially, we`ll see showers and scattered thunderstorms develop Sunday. A few of the storms could be strong to severe. This is a strong cold front that will pushing through the cwa during peak heating. Bulk shear values in the 40-50kt range suggest that potential for a few storms to organized. SBCAPE values are greater than 500 j/kg...not tremendous, but perhaps we`ll see a cell or two overperform given the strong lift from the front. SPC has placed much of the cwa in a Slight Risk Sunday. As much colder air flows in behind the front...h8 temps plummet from +12c Sunday morning to -8c Monday morning...showers will mix with snow. We`ll see early highs in the 70s Sunday and then struggle to see 40 Monday. The cold air won`t last long though and we`ll see highs in the 65-70 degree range from mid week on.

Three consecutive days in the 80s including back to back records. This has been quite a week.
Lol! We are in the 80’s today!! Who knew?!!?!
Rocky (Rockford)
Funny how some people are talking 80 degrees next week! I will believe it when I see it! What a joke!

I’m definitely enjoying the weather today. It took me a couple day to adapt, but now 80 and sunshine feels great!
“The cold air won’t last long though and we’ll see highs in the 65-70 degree range from mid week on.” NWS GRR
Back to back 80+ degrees days in mid April!
I believe this is now GR’s 3rd snowiest winter EVER and more snow is in the forecast! Incredible!
Never could I have imagined we have near record snowfall this winter with above normal temps! Who would have thought! Wow, just wow, WOW!
It has been awhile since we have had a nice April 14tb start to finish!!!
It has jumped nearly 20 degrees here in the past two hours. Gorgeous day.
The best summer weather is 80-95 with dew points 60-70! Incredible!
I believe this is now Michigan’s 2nd warmest start a year ever recorded. Never could I have imagined we’d be so mild with so much sun too!
An entire week in early April that is nicer weather in Michigan than in Florida?! Wow!
Definitely some impressive daytime heating today. We are starting in the 40s and will be reaching the 80s
I totally agree with you, Michael! I would be perfectly content if our summer highs never exceeded 80*, with low humidity. Anything above that just sucks the energy out of you, especially if you have to work outside all day. Still grateful that we don’t have to contend with hurricanes, earthquakes, etc.
That would be a pretty cold climate if you never get above 80 degrees – unless you were in California where the Pacific Ocean keeps temps fairly steady all year round.
New record highs were set yesterday at Lansing with 83. And 77 at Muskegon. At Grand Rapids the record was tied with 80. The official overnight lows were also in the top 3 and all locations. Records could also be set once again today as the forecast is for highs in the low 80’s the records for today are 80 at Grand Rapids, 83 at Lansing, 76 at Muskegon. Holland looks to be safe with their record high of 85 reported in 1941.

The record high was tied at Grand Rapids yesterday with the official H/L of 80/56. There was 99% of possible sunshine. The overnight low so far this morning is a little cooler than in the past couple of days and now set at 44 here in MBT with a dew point of 37. As has been the case it is warmer at GRR with a current reading of 49. For today the record high of 80 was set in 1974 and again in 2006 The record low of 21 was set in 1943 and 1953.

Incredible warmth will turn to an amazingly COLD day on Monday! Wow, just wow, WOW!
After this warm weather it will really feel cold on Monday that is for sure.

TGIF. Several record highs yesterday including GR and Lansing. This has been quite a week. Florida has received unbelievable amounts of rain and it’s been warmer here than there. Strange days, indeed.
Have a fantastic Friday, and make someone smile. 😃
It has been much more humid in Florida than here. While it has been warm here the DP has been low and with the wind it has not really felt as warm as it could.
Slim
I was texting family in Florida complaining.about being so HOT…she was like yeah that’s winter here. She was also saying how very windy it has been with the rain. I could hear it on the phone the other day
I’m so happy that we were there last week instead of this week, that’s for sure.
