Mild & Windy

Our relatively mild weather will ramp up once again today.  Normal temps are in the low to mid-40s for day time highs and the upper 20s for overnight lows in southern Michigan.  In Northern Michigan, the normal temps are the upper 30s and lows in the lower 20s.  According to the CPC, we have a 42% of above-normal temps and 34% of above-normal rain through the rest of the month and possibly into December.

We will see our temps rise into the 50s north to low 60s south today, however, with this, the winds come blowing in from the south causing some high wave action on Lake Michigan where gale warnings are in place.  Wind advisories are up inland blowing from the south/southwest at 25 mph with gusts up to 45 mph.  The advisory ends at 5 pm today.

The updated CPC outlook is now out and there is no major change to the long range guess. It is still looking for mostly near average temperatures and a chance of above average participation

And that is after a good chance of a mild December.

Where’s the snow? I believe a lot of the Michigan ski resorts were already open at this time last year.

Here is the a post you made last year on this date. Looks like not much has change at all.

“feels warm out lately with the snow melting and rain and 50’s upcoming. This “week of winter” we experienced has been similar to other recent years where we get a big winter blast followed by nothing for weeks”

Nope, even better this year since we missed the quick winter blast in 2020! And it’s been much warmer as well.

I was having a discussion with a friend Tuesday about the change in our winter climate (in west MI) over the past several decades. We are in our mid 50’s and were both in agreement that, while we do still have winters with above average snowfall, and colder than average, we do not hold onto our snow pack like we did several decades ago. We may get 20 inches of snow, and then loose it all before more snow comes again…. Would anyone of our weather buffs have the time to look back to, say 1960 or 1970, and compare… Read more »

I don’t have the numbers, but I would definitely agree with that. Growing up in the ‘70s it seemed like we would start getting snow sometime in November, really pile up in December, and you wouldn’t see the green grass for months. As you said, now we may get some snow, but a week later it’s 50 degrees again and all melted away.

At Grand Rapids the average mean seasonal snow fall was 80.5″ in the 1960’s 75.8″ in the 70’s 63.1″ in the 80’s 73.1″ in the 90’s 85.3″ from 2000 to 2010 and in the last 9 years it has averaged 71.9″ As for how long the snow stayed on the ground that has gone down from a mean average of 89 days in the 1970’s to around 70 days in the last 20 years.

Today looks to be another mild and windy day. Several items come to mind for this November. 1. How warm it has been. 2. As Mark stated how windy it has been. and 3. how much sunshine we have had. Today forecast is for highs in the lower 60’s while todays record high is 74 set in 1930 and it has reached 70 or better 3 times. But if it reaches into the lower 60’s this would only be the 14th time it has reached 60 or better on November 19th in Grand Rapids recorded history.’
