Merry Christmas

Definitely a white Christmas over most of the area.  We had a quick dump of snow when the lake effect band moved on shore early this morning.

Kalamazoo is reporting 5 inches, we have about 4 inches here in Otsego.  The lake effect bands are starting to set up as of 7am, though weak at this time they will intensify.

This will not be a good travel day so take care out on the roads.  Snow and blowing snow expected. Plan on slippery road conditions. In addition, areas of poor visibility are expected. Total snow accumulations of 2 to 4 inches are expected.

The graphic to the left shows the warnings and advisories.  The advisories for southwest lower Michigan last until 7pm tonight.

Lake effect snow showers will spread inland today and continue through the middle of the week. Strong winds today will cause some blowing snow along with sub zero wind chills. The cold weather and snow showers will last through the week.

The Winter Weather Advisory has been expanded eastward across the I-96 and I-94 zones. This will include the Lansing and Jackson. Strong low level convergence in northwest flow regime should focus lake effect snow bands well inland across these areas and into Southeast Lower Michigan. Snow accumulations will be limited to generally 2 to 3 inches today but winds gusting over 30 mph at times will cause blowing snow and wind chills near zero.

Christmas Day: Snow. Patchy blowing snow after 9am. Temperature falling to around 14 by 4pm. Wind chill values as low as -4. Breezy, with a west wind 14 to 22 mph, with gusts as high as 32 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. Total daytime snow accumulation of around 3 inches.

Tonight: Snow showers. Patchy blowing snow before 7pm. Low around 7. Wind chill values as low as -5. West northwest wind 11 to 16 mph, with gusts as high as 24 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow accumulation of around an inch possible.

Tuesday: A 50 percent chance of snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 11. Wind chill values as low as -8. West northwest wind 9 to 14 mph.

Tuesday Night: A 50 percent chance of snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 6. Wind chill values as low as -3. North northwest wind around 7 mph.

Wednesday: A 50 percent chance of snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 13. Northwest wind 6 to 8 mph.

Wednesday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 4.

Thursday: A 50 percent chance of snow. Cloudy, with a high near 15.

Thursday Night: A chance of snow. Cloudy, with a low around 10.

Friday: A chance of snow. Cloudy, with a high near 20.

Friday Night: A chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 10.

Saturday: A slight chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 18.

Saturday Night: A chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 8.

A Merry and Safe Christmas to you all from the Michigan Weather Center.

John 1:1-5

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

Luke 2:1-21

In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. (This was the first census that took place while[a] Quirinius was governor of Syria.) And everyone went to their own town to register.

So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

13 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,

14 “Glory to God in the highest heaven,
and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”

15 When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”

16 So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. 17 When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, 18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. 19 But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. 20 The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.

21 On the eighth day, when it was time to circumcise the child, he was named Jesus, the name the angel had given him before he was conceived.
