With rising temps, more sunshine, and longer days we are closing out meteorological winter with a whimper (ie nothing exciting in the forecast today). The woodchuck which lives under my shed has been out and about this past weekend which is a sure sign spring is upon us.
We are still on track for temps near 50° on Saturday though it may be wet – the rest of the week only a chance of scattered flurries on Wednesday is in the forecast.
Kyle (Portland) sent me a photo of a slab of ice along the banks of the Grand River in Clinton County where the ice jam was. I do wonder what that thing is between the slabs of ice in the dirt. Thanks, Kyle!
Forecast Discussion
- Only light snow chances this week with fast moving clippers The large scale pattern the next few days features fast northwest flow between western ridging and an upper low over eastern Canada. A clipper tracks across northern Lower Michigan tonight with light snow possible across the northern zones, closer to the sfc low track. Fast northwest flow brings another clipper for Tuesday night into Wednesday with another chance of light snow. - Storminess next weekend The western ridge breaks down and is replaced with a long wave trough by the end of the week, with sfc low pressure forming over the Plains and moving east or northeast. Trends in the sfc low track and intensity will have to be watched. The GFS is trending weaker and further south and east, which is similar to model trends that were observed in previous storms over the past several weeks.
Thanks again for sharing my picture Michael. It was one heck of a slab.
On another note, today was a very nice day. I was in the Saugatuck/Holland area and it was in the mid 40s and not much wind. Definitely felt like the early stages of spring. We kick off meteorological spring tomorrow.
That is one big slab of ice! Snow is gone, ice is breaking up, here comes Spring already!
With meteorological winter almost over here is a recap as to were Grand Rapids currently stands. For meteorological winter with one more day to go the mean is 26.4° December was warmer than average but January and February were colder than average. That mean of 26.4 is -0.9. As for snow fall the total at Grand Rapids for this winter season is 64.6″ and yes that is below the average of 67.5″ where GR should be at the end of February. There has been 1″ or more of snow on the ground for a total of 68 days the 30… Read more »
I have to reiterate my surprise that Lansing has had more snow than Muskegon this winter.
Muskegon has been on the low side of the snow fall totals for 4 years now.

Ice fishing is still rocken…There is about 8 or 9 inches of ice ice baby out there pretty good for March standards and for the Winter that wasn’t…InDY
One of the best years for ice fishing in a while! That is why happens when you get pummeled with below normal temps week after week!
We will be seeing snowstorms and accumulating snow in March, so NO winter is not over! Get ready now!
While we can not say for sure but yes there can be snow fall in March and April and it has happened in May.

Well, as INDY and I predicted it would be another cold and snowy month! Another BINGO! 3 out of the last 4 months we have seen below normal temps and above normal snowfall and we have seen almost 50% more snow than last season!!!!!!! It really has been a great winter for outdoor sports! Wow, just wow!!!!!!!!
We have snow and cold since November not bad at all now its March and its still snowy and cold who knew?? InDY
False. December was very warm with very little snow.
Very warm lol…InDy
First off nice picture Kyle. The overnight low here did drop to 18 before rising to the current temperature of 24. And yes there is just that trace of snow on the ground.

The cold just keeps rocking!
Well, as predicted, winter has been dying. It’s been over a week since GR reported more than an inch or two of snow on the ground. And over the last 25 days, the biggest snowstorm was a measly 3 inches.
Winter really went out with a whimper.
This winter will go down in history as a typical west Michigan winter see details above.

Looks to be a quiet/boring week of weather.
Breaking Weather News>>>>>it is official in GR February will go in the books as another month with above average snowfall and below average temps! How is that possible with the constant warm weather fake news? What a winter! Absolutely Incredible!
Wow! What an incredible weekend for winter sports! This had to be the best weekend of skiing this decade! Plenty of natural snow, good temps, sun, etc, etc, etc! Wow, just wow’!!!!!!!
If by natural snow, you mean a few clumps of snow in the shade LOL
Ignorant!
