Fire Hazards Increase

Another pleasant day is in store with highs in the low 70s.  Yesterday we reached 69° with a morning low of 36°.  With the dead leaves and branches on the ground in the woods and forests we have an increased fire hazard due to lower dew points and increasing winds.  My daughter had a fire in her woods due to a neighbor’s leaf fire getting out of control.  The fire department was called and it was quickly put out with little damage.   In my woods, the leaves on the ground are very dry and crunchy.  So it is a good idea to NOT burn any leaves or yard debris this week.

U.S.A and Global Events for April 11th:

1965: Severe thunderstorms in the Upper Midwest spawned fifty-one tornadoes killing over 250 people and causing more than 200 million dollars in damage. Indiana, Ohio, and Michigan were hardest hit in the “Palm Sunday Tornado Outbreak”. Although no F5s were officially reported, at least 22 were rated as F3 or F4. This is the third deadliest day for tornadoes on record, behind the Super Outbreak of 4/3/1974, and the outbreak that included the Tri-State Tornado of 3/18/1925. Dr. Ted Fujita discovered suction vortices during the Palm Sunday tornado outbreak. It had been believed the reason why tornadoes could hit one house and leave another across the street completely unscathed was that the whole tornado would “jump” from one house to another. However, the actual reason is that most of the destruction is caused by suction vortices: small, intense mini-tornadoes within the main tornado. Click HERE for more information from the NWS Office in Northern Indiana.

1988: Sixteen cities in the western U.S., nine in California, reported new record high temperatures for the date. Afternoon highs of 95 degrees at Sacramento and 96 degrees at Bakersfield, California were the warmest of record for so early in the season.

1989: Forty-four cities in the south-central and eastern U.S. reported new record low temperatures for the date. Lows of 25 degrees at Conway Arkansas, 29 degrees at Dallas/Fort Worth Texas, and 22 degrees at Ozark Arkansas, were April records. Lows of 26 degrees at Hot Springs Arkansas and 31 degrees at Shreveport Louisiana equaled April records.

2012: The deluge began around 3:30 a.m. Over the next few hours, fast-moving hailstones pummeled the area north of Amarillo, Tex., which had lately been sitting in dust due to a lack of precipitation, according to the news organization. The hail mixed with melting hail turning the dust into mud and the mix create four-foot-high mounds that shut down a major highway for the next 18 hours.

Forecast Discussion

...Dry and warmer through Friday...

An early taste of summer is on the way as a large dome of high
pressure settles over the Great Lakes. H8 temperatures near 8c will
climb to 14c Wednesday when surface temperatures will climb into the
mid to upper 70s. Certainly 80 degrees is in play across the
southern cwa. Surface dewpoints will remain in the 40s through
Friday, so despite the mild temperatures, the air won`t feel humid.

...Showers and perhaps some Thunder Saturday...

A lee side low will track east to Wisconsin Saturday. Moisture
transport northward from the Gulf appears mostly limited to areas
right near the advancing cold front. The atmosphere is poised to
destabilize Saturday as the cold front draws closer. SBCAPE
increases to around 1k j/kg while LI`s fall to -4c. It`s looks
increasingly likely we`ll see a few thunderstorms Saturday afternoon
as mid level lapse rates climb to around 7c/km. We`re not too
bullish on severe storm chances yet, though, as shear values are
only progd to be around 30 kts; we`ll see how things evolve over the
next few days.

...Colder weather Sunday/Monday...

Once the cold front passes through, h8 temperatures fall quickly to -
6c. Highs on Sunday will be back to the 50s and only in the 40s
Monday. Any lingering wrap around moisture may fall in the form of
mixed rain/snow over the northern cwa Sunday night and Monday
morning.

MV was on the ball with this thread. NWS GR has issued has issued a fire weather watch for tomorrow afternoon and evening.

It reached 74 here today. Virtually all of the lower peninsula was in the 70s today. I’m looking forward to four more days of temps in the 70s.

I was going to mention this. Currently the “cool down” looks very brief, and we should be returning to the 60s by the middle of next week. Remember, 60 is technically considered below average in 8-14 days

And definitely not hot lol…INDY

What’s this? Maybe a little more SNOW in the forecast? You mean one of the greatest winters ever isn’t Giving up quite yet? Wow!

Some people don’t like 90 degree days during the summer months. I for one love hot steamy stormy summers. I guess I would be a good candidate for living in Florida in the summer and MI in the winter honestly. Backwards of most people.

I love the warm weather (once I get used to it, I need 1-2 weeks to adjust). I probably would not like the hot weather if I did not have AC though. I really do not like sleeping in warm/muggy weather

Slim

For anyone who thinks that temperatures in the 70’s or 80’s are unusual in April. The last time it did not reach 70 or better in April was way back in 1961. And highs in the low to mid 80’s are also very common in April. Going back to 1960 it has reached 80 or better in 32 of the 63 years.
Slim

Yes, highs in the 40s and 70s are both very common in April. It is a transition month, so even though the “average” is 51-64, we typically see many days warmer and colder than that

Mookie
Mookie

Not all too common for early April, however. Especially a long duration, non-rainy stretch of this magnitude. That is very rare.

Slim

I guess with a warming climate, warm to “hot” April days will be something that people will have to get used to. So in the future this may not be rare at all but just normal.
Slim

Yes!! Bring on more global warming!

Gorgeous day. 70 here. We have all the windows open. Lots of birds chirping. Robins are working on their nests. My wife and I are going for a walk at lunchtime. Get outside and enjoy this fantastic weather. 🙂

Check out the lastest GFS modle shows a snow storm for Saturday night into Sunday that would be crazzy for Mid April standards when mid 60’s are considered hot temps lol…INDY

Rock on Indy and thanks for keeping it real! Keep the facts coming!

Slim

No we need the 90’s that is mid to upper 90’s in the summer. That way every day that is warmer than 75 will be a “wow” and we will not hear the end of it. Long live long hot summers

Enjoy the warm week because by Sunday it comes to a crashing end and we revert right back to our overall cool pattern! Wow the wow, WOW!

It’s actually a bit too warm for me this early in the year. I’m looking forward to more 50-60 degree weather. I need time to adjust. A few cool days actually sound nice!

Slim

My daffodils are now if full bloom. Yesterday was another nice spring day with the official H/L of 67/43 there was 83% of possible sun and no rain fall. The overnight low here in MBY this morning is the current temperature of 42 with clear skies. For today the average H/L is now up to 56/36 the record high of 82 was set in 1977 and the record low of 14 was set in 1973. The record snow fall of 4.6” fell in 2007. Last year the H/L was 59/39.
Slim

Slim

The rest of this week looks to be on the very warm side before a cool down over the weekend that will drop temperatures to near and then below average. The is a chance of some snow to the north as well. So don’t put the winter coats away just yet.
Slim

I put the winter stuff all away. Don’t think I’ll be needing any of that until November.
