Downhill from here

We have clear skies at 6 am with a temp of 53° giving us a pleasant October morning.  Enjoy today because this may be our last chance to get near 70° for a while.  As we go through the week the weather and warmth will be in a declination phase and by the end of the week we will struggle to get to 50°.

Skies will cloud up this morning for all areas. Rain showers will move across Southwest Lower Michigan after 2 pm and through roughly 10 pm. A few thunderstorms are also possible. Gusty winds around 40 mph are expected with any storms that form and behind a cold front in the late afternoon.

Though most areas have seen frost this month we still haven’t had a hard freeze in southern Michigan.  A hard freeze is when temps drop to 28° or less for over two hours.

Much of the U.S. still have drought or dry conditions especially west of the Mississippi and New England.  Hopefully this will be mitigated as we move into winter and get some snow on the ground in the northern areas.

On my walks over the weekend it has become very clear that the Grand Rapids area is now in the peak of the fall color. And in looking at past pictures on my phone I can say that the peak color is earlier then the past 3 Octobers. Last year the peak did not arrive here until the week of October 23 and in 2018 it was not until the week of October 26th and I have pictures of snow on the ground on October 31 2017 with leaves still on the trees. At this time it is cloudy and… Read more »

We went to Houghton Lake on Friday. And while the color was very good from 131 up to M 55 and even east to Lake City area. In the Houghton Lake area while there was some good color it also looked like the cold had made some of the leaves brown.

It’s been a great 6 or 7 months of weather! Mild with tons of sun.

We now enter a month or two of transition weather before we see about 3 months of winter.

Downhill from here, but if we stay in the same pattern as the past few years it will soon be back uphill during December.
