Cooler Weather Ahead (?)

We are in the time of year when we can see a change to cooler temperatures as the days become shorter.  Temps in the Arctic and northern Canada are cooling and sea ice will start to reform.  Some of the models I have been following still show a pattern of up and down patterns in the 80s falling to the low to mid 70s then back up again.  The GFS was giving us upper 60s for highs towards the end of the month into September.  Below are the current temps this morning in Canada.

Hard to believe we are closing out meteorological summer at the end of next week and we have to think about dusting off jackets for cooler weather.  The Allegan County fair and Creative Art Festival in Otsego are coming in September which generally are cooler and need warmer clothes especially at night when the temps start getting into the mid to upper 40s.  I am ready for some cooler air as I have been trying to do some landscaping of the yard and painting of the out buildings which isn’t pleasant with temps in the 80s and high dewpoints which many of you can attest to.  I have large deck which I need to replace all the top boards (60 12 footers) – I am waiting for it to cool down.  Below is the 8 to 14 day outlook from the CPC showing cooler air moving through the Great Plains.

We are in the marginal outlook area for storms later today, most of the severe weather is forecast to be south of the state however we will have to watch for development in lower Michigan should the MCS (Mesoscale Convective System) forming in Iowa move further north than expected. The best chance for storms will be near to south of I-96 late this morning and afternoon.

We do have some storms with some lightning moving through Allegan county at 5am this morning which are expanding across the county – I will put up the radar to monitor the events for today.

We are at that point too where we have some Fall chores to get done but need cooler temps. You are right about not painting – besides you getting hot the paint won’t dry right. It dries too fast. It was hot and muggy here today.

Well skunked yet again with the rain. The radar showed a nice yellow blob heading straight at us, then as it moved overhead it disintegrated into nothing. Ended up with a whopping 0.01”, yes 1 one hundredth of an inch. Like adding tenths of an inch of snow the first half of last Winter. Somehow it now seems even more humid than before.

I was watching the sky and thought it was coming too. Next thing I knew the dark sky was clearing. The sun even came out this evening. It was beautiful to see but it sure made it more humid.

Waiting for it to cool off some. That is a first. LOL!! My daughter was there today and said it was packed and hot! I can usually see it from my place but this year the trees have grown so much I can’t.

Incredibly humid again today with dew points approaching the mid 70’s. Just came back from disc golfing at Brewer Park South of GR and we were just drenched in sweat by the time we were done. Nice championship course they have there, haven’t been to that park in a year and a half.

Check out Lake Michigan temps. They are now a couple degrees warmer than our average summer high. Usually lake temps have already started falling by now, but temps keep rising late into the summer this year.

Actually, there was only a 21 degree difference from yesterday’s high and low. Not much at all and might be even smaller of a difference today. Do I see more mid 80’s in WOOD’s 8-day forecast? Wow the summer just won’t stop!

Is that a derecho in Illinois?

Slim

It could be. Looks like most of the rain well stay south of Grand Rapids today. So I watered the grass this AM. Still in a thunderstorm drought here in NW Grand Rapids area. You know it has been a long time since I have seen such few thunderstorms and this has been going on now for 3 years. It would be different if it was cool and dry but it has been warm and humid and still not very many storms. The current temperature here at my house is 75 with a dew point of 65 the last reading… Read more »

I know it’s prob impossible to say, but what would your guess be on why we’ve had such a long thunderstorm drought? Like you said, it has been exceptionally humid the past few years which one would think would fuel more storms, but instead it’s been the opposite. Has to be some reason, or several?

And no reply back yet from the NWS?

Slim

No reply. If I do not hear from them in a day or two I will write again and if then no response I think I will write another NWS location. But no nothing yet.

I am not sure. Could be less cold fronts but then down south there are few cold fronts in the summer and they get pop up storms all the time. Cold be late Michigan but the water temps are also up so that should be less of a issue. BTW the average number of storms for Grand Rapids is around 35 per year.

Contrary to someone’s wishcasting, GR did, indeed hit 85 degrees yesterday. Looks even warmer and muggier today!
