Cooler & Unsettled

According to the NOAA dictionary, an unsettled weather pattern is a condition in the atmosphere conducive to precipitation. This term is typically associated with the passage of surface or upper-level low-pressure systems, fronts, or other phenomena when precipitation is expected.

Today will see mostly cloudy skies with perhaps a few sprinkles around the area.  Seasonable temperatures are expected much of the week, with some rain shower chances centered on Tuesday and Wednesday, more so in southern portions of the state.

Forecast Discussion

Mid-level moisture is on the increase today as weak shortwave
troughing arrives in advance of an upper low centered across
Minnesota. There could be some isolated showers by this afternoon,
but most places will not see measurable precip. Some light QPF is
possible tonight as showers encroach from the west, generally a
few hundredths of an inch.

The upper low moves southeast, bringing deeper moisture and some
divergence aloft on Tuesday with rain chances increasing. Falling
heights and steeper lapse rates along with marginal instability
will allow for isolated thunderstorms as well on Tuesday.

The upper low slowly moves across Lower Michigan during the
middle of the week with showers and isolated thunderstorms
continuing on Wednesday. The low pairs with an upper high across
SE Canada to form a rex block, but this is transient as the low
weakens and moves east on Thursday to be replaced by longwave
ridging by the end of the week. The sensible weather will feature
cooler, showery weather being replaced by dry and warmer by the
end of the week and next weekend. Precipitation amounts during the
Tuesday to Thursday period could be a quarter to half an inch
with the heavier amounts expected across the southern half of
Lower Michigan.

Congrats to Terri on her upcoming retirement. She was the meteorologist I woke up to to watch weather for as long as I can remember. Wishing her the best on the rest of her life plans!

Simply stunning here in the mountains! We’re near Estes Park, yesterday was 100% sun with a high of 73 degrees and this morning it is 33 degrees. Such a huge difference with dew points in the teens compared to upper 50’s and 60’s back home.
