Another Warm Day Today

NWS Forecast

Expect another warm day with highs in the 60s, although it will be cooler north and west of Grand Rapids. A few sprinkles are possible this afternoon.  Widespread soaking rain moves in on Friday, mainly for the afternoon and evening. Temperatures will struggle to get out of the 40s with a brisk northeast wind. Showers and chilly temperatures will linger into Saturday.

Yesterday I started cleaning up the debris left over from the winter, especially along the roadway where the plows and snowblower tend to throw gravel and sod all over the place.  We had a well above normal temp of 69° for the high and a low of 29°.  The cats loved having the doors and windows open as they try to plan their escape routes to get outside.  My black long-haired cat Monster used to hide under my black lab and sneak out the door when he was smaller.  Not so much now as he is an 18 pounder.  He is leash trained and gets as excited as the dog when the leashes come out.

Forecast Discussion

...Warm today, then rain Friday and next Tuesday...

Surface analysis shows a cold front stretching from the central UP
southwest to eastern Iowa. This front is going to move through the
cwa today. Highs will be stratified due to the front with cooler
highs in the 40s in the northwest cwa and warmer temps near 70 in
the far southeast.

There isn`t a lot of moisture for the front to interact with and so
regional radar shows little in the way of precipitation along the
front.

Developing low pressure in the southern Plains will ride northeast
along the front later tonight and Friday and the low will pass by to
the south. We should see rain develop from southwest to northeast by
late morning. We`ll see a decent amount of rain from this low. Total
qpf near 0.8 is expected south of I-95...around three quarters of an
inch near I-96 and around a half inch near US-10. The northern half
of the cwa is abnormally dry and so any rainfall would be helpful
there.

The far southeast cwa may see a small window Friday night where
elevated instability increases as the warm sector noses northward
when the low approaches. In this region, mainly southeast of a
Battle Creek to Mason line, thunderstorms may develop but will
quickly move out of the cwa as the low moves through.

As the low moves east, there is a chance that the rain will mix with
some wet snow over the northern cwa as it ends late Saturday.

High pressure moves in Sunday and we should see quite a bit of
sunshine and highs in the mid 50s.

Sat outside for a while and enjoyed today’s weather as well as a 2 mile hike along the Grand River in the State Game area. Back to some cooler temps now which I am ok with. 40s and 50s are nice too.

If no cold and snow then temps around 70 degrees is not bad!

Honestly I have been enjoying the 40s and 50s. Wouldn’t mind a month of those temps before we get into the 60s and 70s.

Same here! Looks like we’ll be heading back to those temps soon! Which I love!!

Slim

It is a very warm March day. Here at my house I now have a temperature of 71 the last official reading at GRR was 66. That official reading of 66 is the 8th warmest for any March 17th at Grand Rapids. My unofficial reading of 71would be the 3rd warmest.

Plenty of 70’s in Michigan right now. Wow, I love it!

Slim

The current reading of 71 at Lansing will be a tie for the 2nd warmest March 17. The current 60 at Muskegon is also the 2nd warmest.

Hey, as long as there isn’t any snow, I’m more than happy with the 40 to 50 degree temps! Temps in the 50’s are fantastic for golf!! Mid-50’s on Sunday and Maple Hill is open! Maybe get a quick 9 in!

Just hit 70 at my house. Such a nice day. Birds are chirping and I can hear the sandhill cranes in the distance. Feels like May.

I love when Rocky throws out those predictions!! He’s wrong with all of his predictions, so we should be seeing a good amount of nice warm temps as we go thru March!

What happened with the cold March we were supposed to get with the pummeling of snow? LOL

And at least three Winter Storms, lol!! Just another blizzard free winter in GR!

Phew 65 yesterday! Looks like 70’s for parts of Michigan today! The warm March with below average snow continues.

Slim

The official high at Grand Rapids yesterday was 65. Here at my house I reached a warmer 67. That 65 at GRR is the 7th warmest ever recorded at Grand Rapids for any March 16. If it makes it into the mid 60’s today that would be another top ten for today. So early spring warm days are kind of rare around here. The official overnight low at GRR has been a warm 44 it is a cooler 38 here at my house with clear skies. The sun is above the horizon today for 12 hours hours of sunup will… Read more »

Cute info about your cat MV. I didn’t have a cat up until about a year ago. There was a kitten living under the hood of my dads truck. Either the mom was killed or maybe the mom rejected her I’m not sure. She had to of been the runt of the litter because she is smaller than a normal size cat. Her face still looks somewhat like a kitten she’s adorable. We love her just the way she is and is happy and has a home with us now as we took her in as our own. I never… Read more »

That is my cat in my picture picture. She is now 14 years old and it is getting harder for her to get up on my lap when we watch TV.

Our cat is 19 and still going strong – as strong as a 19-year old cat can be, I reckon.

I have a dog (he’s a little puffball, similar to cat size). But only 1.5 years old. Would be fun to get a cat too, but not sure how they would get along

We have a 13-year old Yorkie. She’s about the same size at the cat. Cat was none too thrilled when Santa brought the puppy. They’re BFFs now.

Man Mark, we had a little Yorkie for almost 12 years and then she passed a little over 5 years ago. Very hard day for us we loved her like a kid. She was a great dog!

Would be cool to have a Michigan Weather Center Facebook page where we could post images, including of severe events, snowfall, etc. Not sure if that’s something MV has thought about, just a thought
