Another Great Fall Day

With clear skies, we have 35° at 6:30 this morning.  The frost advisory we have in place expires at 9 am.  Yesterday’s high in Otsego was 64° and the low was 43°.  Our sunny dry days will continue through Wednesday with temperatures in the mid-60s to near 70°.  Clouds move back in Wednesday night with the approach of a strong cold front, temps will struggle to reach 50° on Friday.  We may see widespread early Saturday morning with temps falling to around freezing.

Forecast Discussion

High pressure will continue in control of our wx pattern early
this week and result in mostly clear to partly cloudy skies.
Clear skies and calm winds early this morning have set up
excellent radiational cooling conditions and the frost advisory
for most of our area (where the growing season has not ended
already) remains in effect through mid morning.

A large diurnal temp swing is expected today (and even more so
tomorrow) as high temps will reach the low to mid 60s after the
chilly start to the day given the dry airmass in place and ample
sun. Areas of frost are expected again early Tuesday morning.

The strong cold front will bring a chance of showers Wednesday
night. Showers will become quite prevalent along and just ahead
of the front Thursday. The convective threat with this system
looks minimal largely due to very weak instability. North to nnw
flow lake effect clouds and showers are expected Thursday night
and Friday particularly near Lake MI and west of US-131.

A few wet snow flakes could mix in at times mainly across
relatively higher elevations of our northern fcst area and inland
from relatively mild Lake MI waters as H8 temps plummet to -3 to
-5 C Friday. High temps Friday will only reach the 40s.

There is potential for widespread frost and possibly a fairly
widespread freeze Friday and Saturday nights. This will be largely
contingent on extent of clearing both nights and on whether winds
can decouple and go calm near the sfc.

Despite all the warm weather hype hype, yesterday was yet another below normal temp day in GR! No hot air in sight and day after day with sun and below normal temps! It doesn’t get better than than that! This after a summer with near normal temps all summer long, no heat waves, and hardly any lawn watering needed! Wow, just wow! Incredible!

From about noon to 6pm the last few days, the weather has felt pretty summery to me. People at the beach sunbathing in swimsuits. People biking and golfing in shorts.

Looks like this continues for another 3 days.

I like how in MLive they said all of Lower Michigan was generally 2-3 degrees above average for September – completely disregarding GR’s numbers like I do now.

In looking back at the past warm season here is the total of days with high temperatures of 90 or better. At Grand Rapids 7, Muskegon and Holland 6, Lansing 17. To the east Detroit 15, Flint 10 and Saginaw 6. For some reason Lansing seems to have been warmer that surrounding areas.
