Thunder snow

It is a winter wonderland in SW Michigan this morning, everything is white from the tops of the trees to the ground with some light snow falling.  The winter weather advisory will end at 11 am this morning.  The snow will taper off to a few flurries this afternoon.

I have a feature from National Geographic on thundersnow this morning:

Forecast Discussion

...Snow this morning, then ending...

KGRR 88d shows a band of moderate to heavy snowfall along the I-96
corridor from Ottawa County to near Lansing. This band has been
persistent for the past few hours and has produced snowfall rates
over 2 inches per hour earlier in the night. Would not be surprised
to see a few snow totals come in at 7-9 inches. This area of
enhanced snow has been collocated in an area of elongated vorticity
advection, significant lift in the dendritic growth zone and within
the nose of the max moisture transport zone. The last few frames of
the radar loop show the band beginning to weaken...in line with
model forecasts of moisture advection moving east.

The surface low associated with the snow is over southeast Indiana
and will continue moving away from the region today. The upper
trough supporting this low, however, will take another 12 hours or
so to move through which means that the snow won`t end until this
afternoon, although the snow rates will decrease as lift within the
DGZ decreases. Travel will remain hazardous this morning as roadways
are snow covered and slippery. The Winter Weather Advisory will
remain in effect until 11 AM.

...Next chance of snow is Sunday...

A large storm off the Pacific Northwest coast will move across the
Rockies early in the weekend and fragment into two lows. The
northern stream low will affect our area Sunday/Monday but impacts
will be limited because the southern stream low is progd to be the
strongest and will take most of the moisture with it.

The northern low will come through a bit negatively tilted and so
will take more time to move through. A prolonged period of light
precipitation is possible beginning Saturday night and continuing
through Monday. Total QPF around a tenth of an inch will result in
an inch or two of snow during this timeframe

...Middle of the week dry, then wet toward the end of the week...

A fair amount of discrepancy exists between the GFS and ECMWF during
the end of the week. The GFS is a little quicker pushing a cold
front through Thursday vs the ECMWF most likely due to an upper
trough that isn`t as deep as the ECMWF. Both models produce
precipitation over the region, but at different time frames.
Temperature profiles would support mixed rain and snow but details
remain elusive at this point.

Way to early to know but NWS hinting at another possible system late next week. European shows a deep 984mb low moving east of MI giving us more snow and windy conditions. Could easily disappear but certainly interesting as we have been in an active pattern.

“Then a trough with cold air digging
into the central CONUS late in the week may develop a sizable
cyclone over the Great Lakes or Northeast US late in the week.
Details are far from settled but the odds are increased for
precipitation and a swing back to colder temperatures late in the
week.”

You know it – every Thursday/Friday we get a storm! What a pattern!

Driveway and sidewalk are clear from the melt. I am very surprised they called school today.

None of the models and mets predicted this much snow! The closest was the RDB which said up to 8 inches and believe or not ACCU weather – they were the only one that said 6 to 10 inches for GR, but absolutely no one predicted 12+ inches! Incredible storm!

Here you go, Rocky:

NWS Grand Rapids
@NWSGrandRapids
Snow from midnight to 7 AM is 8.0 inches at NWS Grand Rapids, which sets a daily record for March 10th. Storm total of 11 inches puts us over 100 inches for the season. As of 7 am the seasonal snow total is 102.8 inches at Grand Rapids and it’s still snowing.

Wow this is the second snowiest winter I remember. The number of significant snowstorms this season has been crazy!

Rocky (Rockford)

Wow to the wow! That ranks this winter as the 7th most GR snowfall in history! And still counting! What a winter, absolutely incredible! Another great weekend for winter sports!

Per this site Kalamazoo has only received 54 inches so far this winter season. There’s an interesting compilation of data at the bottom of the site part of which says:
“This is a record for the lowest number of total days with at least 1 inch of snow on the ground, if this record holds for the remainder of the winter.”

We’re right about 50 inches here, which is a smidgen above average. Regarding the snow on the ground, it’s the same here. It seems that every snow event has melted within 48 or so hours. I’m not going to need to shovel today. Half of our driveway has melted already this morning and the other half only has an inch or less. The street is wet and snow-free.

Nathan (Forest Hills)

That seems like a pretty good amount. When I went to MSU we had very little snow

I measured 7 inches here.

Slim

With the type of snow that fell last night I don’t know how much actually fell, but I took several measurements around the yard. And there is between 5 to 5.5” of snow on the ground here. The official H/L at Grand Rapids for yesterday was 42/30 there was 0.15” of precipitation before midnight that fell as a reported 3” of snow fall. There was 16% of possible sunshine. The overnight low here in my yard was 30 and as I stated I have between 5 to 5.5” of snow on the ground. At the current time light snow is… Read more »

The CPC still shows below normal temps the rest of this month! SNOW, SNOW and more SNOW! Great mid March snowstorm! The skiing will be incredible this weekend! Wow to the wow! Rock n Roll will never die and winter is the best!

Slim

The rest of March looks to be below average temperature wise. So few warm spring like days for a while at least.

What a storm, another overproducer, above normal snowfall for March! This after we have been hearing winter is dead, snow is done, nice warm Spring temps are right around the corner, etc!

Kyle (Portland, Ionia County)

Here we just had a monster storm hit Michigan with thundersnow about a week ago, now a 6-12+ snowstorm. Heck of a month for snow in the southern lower so far!

Rocky (Rockford)

above normal snowfall for March and the season!

Bernie (Hamilton)
Bernie (Hamilton)

have not had the measuring stick out yet, but I also watched my dog “plow” her way to her pee spot, and between that and looking at my deck railing, I ‘m making an educated guess of about 7-8 inches? One more time do fire up the snow blower. I’m suprised Rocky hasn’t checked in yet, but he is probably out rolling around in it! LOL

Mark (East Lansing)

The ground is white again. Not all schools are closed over here. We have our third snow day of the season. Methinks they wanted a three-day weekend, and I don’t blame them. I cleared a path for our little dog this morning and it looks like we have 3-4″ at this point out back. Much less on the street due to melting.

Have a great day everyone and remember, make someone smile. 🙂

Just measured 6” in my yard and still snowing moderately.. There is much more than that around the GR area. Seeing reports around a foot in some location and it’s still snowing pretty heavily! Monster storm. I love the big snow storms. Let the good times roll!
