Yet Another Winter Weather Advisory

Lots of snow this month – I have dog runs I cleared out with the snow blower in my back yard.  The dogs seem to be more content to porpoise through the snow ignoring my thoughtful trails.

We have a large back yard full of dog tracks.  My older Aussie just kind of plows his way through while my younger lab seems to enjoy herself leaping around and sticking her head into the snow.

The cats are another story.  They follow the plowed area and end up on our doorstep wanting to come in.  We have ten cats in the neighborhood, six of them spend the winter in our house.  One of them was abandoned when a neighbor passed away.

In the summer we generally have one cat in the house full time, she was one we ‘adopted’ as a kitten.  Yes, we have a soft heart for the critters.  God has placed them in our care along with all the squirrels, birds, possums and raccoons we feed.  This has been a cold winter and they all need food and a warm place to stay.  I keep telling my wife one of these nights when she lets the cats in a possum will come trotting in.  We have four small shelters for whatever critters have the need for a warm dry place.

We have a winter weather advisory for most of the state until 3pm.  Looking at the radar we are having a dry slot moving into SW Michigan so the snow should be winding down as should the active weather pattern we have seen over the past week.  Snow will continue from Grand Rapids to the north and the east –  Detroit and Ann Arbor may see a mixed bag of precipitation.  Snowfall accumulations can be found on our interactive radar on the Forecast page.

A quiet weather can be expected for most of the week, with moderating temperatures. High pressure at the sfc will be moving east of the area, allowing for a southerly flow to bring in warmer temperatures. Aloft, the upper air pattern will become almost zonal, and a short wave moving toward the area will get sheared out. This along with limited moisture return will keep conditions mostly dry through Wednesday.

Quite a bit of uncertainty exists in the later Wednesday through Thursday time frame. The uncertainty develops as we will have a northerly stream cold front dropping south toward the area, and a southerly stream low coming out of the Plains. The timing of each of these features and how/if they phase will have big implications on the forecast. Solutions range from a small chance of precipitation with the northerly stream front as it passes through, to potentially heavy rains and a big meltdown if the two systems phase prior to moving through here.

For now, we have compromised on temps and precipitation chances until this complicated scenario settles itself out. Either way, we do expect colder air will settle in for Friday and Saturday behind the systems. This will bring some lake effect chances, although the chances do not look significant at this time.

Between 5 and 6 inches of new snow here last night and this morning. After the quieter period this week, things look to get active again. Models seem to be having trouble with where systems will end up. Obviously, as a snow lover, I am hoping the northern jet stream sets up to our south a bit. If so, we could be looking at some decent storms. Friday is starting to look a bit interesting in terms of a possible snow system if the cold air makes it back before the precip. (As Michael already mentioned.)

We had the same here.

As a follow up on the post above officially at the airport (not including this new snow fall) the deepest snow reported here in Grand Rapids this season so far is 10″ Last season it was 9″ in 2012/16 it was 10″ in 2014/15 it was 10″ in 2013/14 it was 24″ over the last 30 years the mean deepest snow on the ground here in Grand Rapids is 12″ with a range in that 30 years of 24″ in 2014 to only 6″ in 1986

I now have the driveway cleared and waiting for the road to be plowed, That may not happen until tomorrow. My son was over and said the main roads are plowed but some still have hard packed snow on them. He said the side roads are not plowed, I took some new measurements there is 4.7″ of new snow that fell and now there just over 14″ of snow on the ground. This might be the deepest the snow cover gets this season.

I just took measurements and it looks like 3.5″ of new snow and now there I have a total of just over 13″ on the ground. It is still snowing so will have to take more measurements later. This could be the most snow on the ground this season. One thing good about this last weeks snow is that it is not heavy snow and is easy to shovel and snow blow. That helps as I am still recovering from the flu/bronchitis as the cough just seems to want to hang on. Back to snow fall Grand Rapids as of… Read more »

Is there still anyone out there that is sticking with the prediction of below normal snowfall for GR for this season? If so you are saying we will see less than about 5 inches of snow the rest of the entire season?

I have no idea how much additional snow we have received or how much is on the ground. It’s a bunch. There is freezing rain about 30 miles to the SE, so I am thankful that we’re in the snow.

Just finished the driveway. The piles along the driveway are chest deep. Lots of snow.

What a great week of winter weather! I have done it. This week I cross country skied, downhill skied, snowmobiled and used the snowshoes! Who wouldn’t love winter weather like this?
