Yup, its that time of the year when the Weather Channel issues its new list of winter storm names for the upcoming season.
Winter storms are named based on either meeting or the expectation to meet, at least one of the following criteria:
– NWS winter storm, blizzard, or ice storm warnings covering at least a population of 2 million.
– NWS winter storm, blizzard, or ice storm warnings covering at least an area of 400,000 square kilometers, (154440.863 square miles).
Lake-effect snowstorms are not named, and any warnings covering lake-effect snow are not counted for consideration for naming a winter storm.
Last year much of the country east of the Rockies had below-normal snowfall with the exception of the U.P., northern Michigan and a good portion New York, New Hampshire and Maine (my old home state).
I am not going to get into a winter forecast (yet), it is still a bit early though many are throwing their thoughts out there for our 2020-2021 season…

Today was a beautiful Fall day. My grandson finished his bike ramp that he built with Grandpa so we went over and watched him with his bike on it. The faster the bike went the better he liked it. lol!!
Pretty day today. The sun was warm and I even opened my office window for some fresh air.
Get ready for wild “la nina” winter! Rock n Roll will never die!
2020 looks to be our 4th straight warm year in a row, and most Michigan locations are now having their top 10 warmest year ever recorded. Wow!
GR has seen 81 days over 80 degrees in 2020, and Detroit has seen 87 days. Additionally, GR has had no below zero days at all in 2020!
https://www.mlive.com/weather/2020/10/michigan-temperatures-pacing-at-top-ten-warmest-year.html
There have been a total of 15 years where the temperature has not reached 0 or below at Grand Rapids. There have been 12 more years with just 1 day below. Of the 12, 3 have occurred in December. We will have to see how the next 3 months turn out before we know how this year will end up for the annual mean. At this time the 10th warmest is 50.5° in 1939. Of the top 10 warmest 3 have been in the last 10 years. 2012, 2016 and 2010 and at this time 2017 in in 11th place… Read more »
Again we are thankful for Slim on the weather blog more weather facts indeed…INDY
Most of those stats you cite Slim are fun (ie. “it hasn’t been this warm/cold since…” or “in the average year we see…”) but they don’t really tell the duration or magnitude of the heat we’ve seen in recent years. Thankful MLive could put the bigger picture into perspective for us. It’s been a really warm one! After several recent very warm years.
I tell it as I see it. In the last 20 years 7 have been in the top 20 warmest while only 1 has been in the top 20 coldest. I would say that a good case could be made for a good deal of warming that has accelerated in the last 20 or so. And if that is the case why don’t you just say it?
Slim
32* degrees out at the YARDofBRICKS around 430am this morning cold for October standers but again whoe’s complaining lol… Seeing some 60s coming that will feel like a “REAL” heat wave sure will make for some good old eaf raking weather around west Michigan….Have a super Fall Monday!! INDY
The official low at Grand Rapids looks to have been 32. Here at my house the low was 34. And there was some fog. I am not a big fan of naming winter storms, unless the storm is really extreme. I am not sure what my criteria would be for a named winter storms but some examples would the the storms of 1967, 1978 the so called Groundhog storm of 2011. There would be others but you get the idea.
Slim
Yeah I agree with that. Just a bunch of hype over a run of the mill low pressure system. The Ground Hog storm was our last major winter storm/blizzard we’ve had, and that will be 10 years ago this Winter.
Storm names are irrelevant and meaningless in the winter. Unlike hurricanes, no one remembers winter storms by names. So dumb.
Well, it was a nice fall while it lasted. Looks like the big warming trend begins today!
So far the expected “big warming trend” seems to be will within the average range for October. You know there has only been one October in grand rapids recorded history that has not gotten to at least 70 and many have gotten well into the 80’s.
Slim
Average high is lower 60’s by the weekend but it will still feel like summer. I love it!
We are so thankful having Slim on here!! Just more weather facts always ….INDY
See post above. We are having our top 10 warmest year ever recorded despite a few on here who try to paint an opposite picture. Just the facts!
Slim is talking about the month October not the year in general I’m sorry!! Let’s keep it on the road please lol…INDY
