Weekend Storms & Rain

Yesterday we reached 85° with a low of 66°.  We had .56 of an inch of welcomed rain in the evening – this brought our total to 3.96 inches for the month.  We are one of the wetter areas mainly due to the 1.30 inches we received on the 8th.  Below is the updated drought monitor released on Thursday:

There is a forecast for much-needed rain for most of the area this weekend, hopefully, a widespread event coming Saturday night into Sunday.  Saturday looks to be very warm and humid.  Below is the SPC outlook for Saturday and Sunday.

Forecast Discussion

...Fair and Dry Today...

A mid level ridge with SFC high pressure to our south will
dominate the weather pattern through Friday. This will allow for
drier air, so dewpoints will drop through the afternoon. So
expect a hot and dry July day with daytime Max Temps in the upper
80s to low 90s. While winds will be weaker than previous days,
wind gusts up to 20 mph will be possible this afternoon.

...Showers and Storms possible Friday night into Saturday...

Another short wave will traverse the midwest Friday night into
Saturday. This shortwave will clip southern Michigan Friday night
into Saturday morning. The models continue to trend this system
southward, however the I 94 corridor remains possible, especially
the southwest corner of Michigan. A low low level jet with decent
mid level moisture will correspond to this systems passage. So
showers with thunderstorms are possible. However, the lack of
instability and inversion at the surface will stifle convection
growth.

...Widespread showers and storms possible Saturday Night...

As previously forecasted, the trend for a deepening, strong, storm
system will move through the Upper mid west Saturday and through
the Great Lakes system Saturday night into Sunday. Strong
southwesterly flow through the mid level will advect upwards of
1.75 PWATS which is anomalous for this time of year. This
moisture, coupled with the deep layer shear and upper level
dynamics will allow for showers and storms. A Mesoscale convective
system or (MCS) is expected to develop. This is among the reasons
SPC has an enhanced risk for MN and WI Saturday. As this MCS moves
eastward it will weaken but MI is in the marginal risk for severe
storms Saturday night into Sunday.

...Lingering showers with cooler weather early next week...

As the system traverses the region Sunday morning expect showers
to linger through the first half of the day. The hot temperatures
will be cooler, in the 70s to low 80s, Monday and Tuesday. Another
wave fore showers and storms will be possible mid to late next
week.

90 again here today. We’ve had 14 so far. Local TV met said 90 could return for a couple of days in a week.

We took the kids up to the Straits for a couple of days. We went to Mackinac Island, which is always fun. Other than the one storm on Wednesday, the weather was amazing. Very few clouds, very warm with a nice lake breeze.

Outlook for August is in from CPC. They show August leaning above average and also drier than normal.

If we have clear skies tonight here’s a decent chance of a solar storm hitting earth which means a decent chance of seeing the northern lights. Their guess at timing is the perfect time for North America if it hits as scheduled. More info here:

Got a rainfall total of .07” yesterday, biggest rainfall total in quite some time. At this rate we should reach an even inch of rain total sometime in October. Reminds me of the past several Winters when we were measuring snow 1 tenth of an inch at a time.

Not 1 droplet of rain yesterday here at my house. I see there was some pretty impressive scud pictures, rainbow pictures, mammatus pictures as well. Nothing like that here at my house. Got dark to the west but then everything sort of fell apart and before I knew it it was sunny to the west. Hopefully some widespread rain for tomorrow night especially in the areas that REALLY need it.

I think we got a little of all that yesterday. Rainbow..even a double tried to appear, very faint. The clouds were amazing last night!!!

I was playing tennis last night as the storm came through (not recommended!). A bit of thunder and a brief downpour, but the clouds were really amazing and there was a rainbow at the end. The air cooled after the storm as the downdraft came through.

Slim

Had a vey brief shower here, no thunder that I could hear. But as I have stated before the one or two rumbles of thunder are enough for the NWS to call that a “thunderstorm” not my idea of a “thunderstorm” that’s for sure. Oh well that is just the way it is.

We didn’t get a lot.of rain either. Enough that I didn’t have to water the garden..it thundered a few times and went over. We were left with a rainbow and beautiful sky though!!

The official H/L yesterday at Grand Rapids was 88/69. Late yesterday afternoon there was a very brief shower that dropped 0.06” at GRR and here in MBY the total rain fall was just 0.03” in that brief shower. The official overnight low looks to have been 68 at GRR while here in MBT the low was 65 at the current time it is clear here and 70 in MBY. Today and tomorrow look to continue to be very warm to hot. With highs in the upper 80’s to near 90. The best chance of widespread rain fall still looks to… Read more »
