Veterans Day – Snow & Cold

First up: happy Veterans Day to all of those who serve or have served in the armed forces.  Thanks to all of you who have given your time to protect this great land of ours.  My father in law served in the Pacific Campaign during WW2 and we heard the many stories of the horrors of war and hardship from outside sources.  His story was immortalized in the book “The Ghost Mountain Boys” written by James Campbell.

My father-in-law had many stories to tell of his time in this campaign but never complained or related how bad it really was – after reading the book I gained a lot of respect for those who served in WW2 without complaint.  America at that time had a multitude of tough farm boys who knew hardship and hard work.

My father and step-father both served during the Korean conflict.  As for myself I just missed Vietnam by a couple months – I registered but my number wasn’t called.  I had a lot of friends who went there and had to suffer both the conflict and bad decisions of the commanders – then when coming home to a country who took out their disenchantment and anger on them.  One friend who was a gunner on Huey helicopters had people throwing garbage on him and his fellow soldiers when they landed stateside after their tour.  You had to be around during that time to understand that the baby boomer generation was feed up with war, however they took it out on the wrong people – our soldiers go where they are told – the government and Dept of Defense give the orders.

Give our veterans and those who currently serve a hug, a handshake, a smile and a thank you for serving our country – they all deserve it….

Our winter weather advisory continues until 1pm for Allegan and Van Buren counties – the rest of the area it expires at 7pm.  At 7:30am we have 29° with about an inch of snow on the ground and light snow falling.  The temps will not get above freezing today and wind chills will be in the single digits.  The heaviest snow will be along the US31 corridor – Local snowfall amounts may exceed a foot in western sections of Van Buren County, Other locations may see 3 to 6 inches from this event.

It has stopped snowing here at my house. I now have just under 5″ on the ground. Not sure what the official amount at GRR will end up at. The current temperature here is now at 29 the last reading at GRR was still 26.

4.5 inches at the NWS Grand Rapids .. Closing in on a single most snow on this day ever ….INDY

Slim

On one of the other weather boards it was pointed out that the Grand Rapids area may be getting snow enhanced snow fall from Lake Huron and the Saginaw Bay. In looking at the radar that may be the case. That is very unusual and later in the season even with a NE wind there is little enhancement this far west but at this time the lakes are still warm and Saginaw Bay is still open. It will soon be iced over and that will not happen later is the season. My wife is up in Bay City this week… Read more »

This winter has been described/forecast as “Catastrophic” since June. Never before seen cold: Check. Never before seen snowfall: Check. Winter begins in October: Check. The term “average temps” rendered useless: Check. No need to go on…the Southern Arctic is the Arctic. Sure…let’s continue to ignore what is before us, and go about our days thinking everything is normal. Good luck to us all.

Roads are very slick in my neck of the woods. I was out there and it looks to be about 4″ in my yard. Take it slow out there.

Slim

First on the road snow fall is always like that. People forget how to drive on ice and snow and just think many now have AWD and 4 wheel dive and that still makes no difference.

Just took another snow fall reading with my high tech snow measuring took (a yard stick) and I am now have 3.3” of snow on my snow board. Not sure what GRR will end up with but here are the top 5 snowiest days for November 11th 1. 5.8” in 1995 2. 3.5” in 1950 3. 2.4” in 1997 4. 2.3” in 1933 and 1.9” in 1932. For anyone who thinks that a snow fall on November 11th leads to a snowy season will think again. At Grand Rapids the total snow fall for the above winter seasons. 1995/96 79.1”f… Read more »

At this time light to moderated snow is falling here at my house. There is just under 3” on the ground here (2.8”) less on the driveway and the road. The current temperature here is 28 and it is now 26 at the airport. The wind is not a factor at this time. Yesterday the H/L at Grand Rapids was 42/32. And The mean temp at GRR is now 35.9 and that is a departure of -8.2° For today the average H/L is 50/35° The record high for today is 73 set in 1909 and the record low is 18… Read more »
