Tornado Drill

At 1pm you may hear the sirens go off in your town.  This is a test of the state wide tornado drill.

The average lead time for tornadoes to develop is 10 to 15 minutes, which means residents need to be ready to react quickly when a warning is issued.

To be ready for a tornado:

  • Identify the lowest place to take cover during a tornado. If a basement does not exist, find an interior hallway away from windows, doors, and outside walls.
  • Go under something sturdy, such as a workbench or stairwell, when taking shelter in the basement or designated spot.
  • Conduct regular tornado drills. Make sure each household member knows where to go and what to do in the event of a tornado.
  • Stay tuned to commercial radio or television broadcasts for news on changing weather conditions or approaching storms.
  • Know the difference: a Tornado Watch means conditions exist for a tornado to develop; a Tornado Warning means that a tornado has been sighted or indicated by weather radar.
  • Be aware of the following signs that can indicate an approaching tornado:
    • Dark, often greenish sky
    • Large hail
    • A large, dark low-lying cloud
    • Loud roar, similar to a freight train
  • Develop a 72-hour emergency supply kit with essential items such as a three-day supply of water and food, a NOAA Weather Radio, important family documents and items that satisfy unique family needs.

A series of low pressure systems will track through the region over the next couple of days resulting in unsettled weather. Light precipitation this morning will end quickly leading to a dry day for the area. A fast moving low pressure system tracks through tonight with a round of rain. Then warm front lifts northward through the region for Friday causing more showers and moderating temperatures especially for southern Lower Michigan. This front may stall over the state bringing lots of rain and a possibility of storms for the weekend – freezing rain may become an issue north of GR so this will bare watching especially when the cold air moves back into our area Sunday.

Our sirens were already tested for 2018…Monday maybe?…last Friday?…can’t remember. Freezing Rain potential sounds interesting, although very difficult to have all the pieces in place for it to take place. Ch13 very interested in freezing rain potential, while Ch8 never said a word. Never mind coldest April ideas…2018 looks to be coldest overall year.

In addition, models continue to trend farther south and colder which could result in more solid and less liquid precipitation and given potential qpf amounts some spots could see a LOT of snow. The ECMWF and now even GFS model soundings for Gaylord (and points north) keep much of this event mainly snow (exception may be Friday) which could easily add up to a foot or more (yelp). Even farther south soundings are on the fringe of mainly all snow or a mix of rain and snow or perhaps even some freezing rain. Potential remains for this system to have… Read more »

Here are some comparisons from April 2016 vs 2018. Up north in 2016 Sault Ste Marie had 17.6” of snow fall for the whole month with all of the snow falling between the 1st and 12th On April 17th the temperature made it up to 75° that is NOT expected this year. At Marquette there was 40.9” of snow fall that April but there the temperatures shot up to 65 on the 15th 76 on the 16th and all the way up to 78 on the 17th At Stambush they reported 10.4” of of snow in April 2016 and they… Read more »

Woah Marquette has only had 4″ of snow this April versus 41″ in April 2016. That’s a big snow drought for them, especially given the colder temps.

I was looking more at TC and Gaylord myself since that seems to be Rocky’s “snow country.”

By this time in April 2016, many places up north were reporting around 3 feet of new snow for the month.

A better year for comparisons would be April 1982.
