While our thoughts and prayers are with MV and his family I will do todays post for him.
With Sunday and the first part of Monday being so cloudy I looked to see how May was in that department and lo and behold May 2019 was the 3rd cloudiest May in Grand Rapids history. Grand Rapids only had around 36% of possible sunshine. The lowest sunshine for any May in recorded history at Grand Rapids was 28% in 1973 in 2nd place is 2003 with 32% 2019 with 36% is the new 3rd place, 1979 with 39% is in 4th place and in 5th place is 1943 with 42% the May average is 56%
Here is some weather history on this date in the US (sadly it only goes up to 1989)
Weather History
For Tuesday, June 11, 2019
1842 – A late season snowstorm struck New England. Snow fell during the morning and early afternoon, accumulating to a depth of ten to twelve inches at Irasburg VT. Berlin NH was blanketed with eleven inches of snow during the day. Snow whitened the higher peaks of the Appalachians as far south as Maryland. (David Ludlum)
1877 – The temperature at Los Angeles, CA, reached 112 degrees during a heatwave. It would have been the all-time record for Los Angeles but official records did not begin until twenty days later. (The Weather Channel)
1972 – Heavy showers brought 1.64 inches of rain to Phoenix AZ, a record for the month of June. (The Weather Channel)
1987 – South Texas endured another day of torrential rains. Up to twelve inches of rain drenched Harris County, and nearly ten inches soaked Luce Bayou, mainly during the afternoon hours. Thunderstorm rains left seven feet of water over Highway 189 in northern Val Verde County. Flooding caused nine million dollars damage in Real County. A thunderstorm at Perryton, TX, produced golf ball size hail and 70 mph winds, and spawned a tornado which struck a mobile killing one person and injuring the other four occupants. (The National Weather Summary) (Storm Data)
1988 – Thirty cities in the central and eastern U.S. reported record low temperatures for the date, including El Dorado, AR, with a reading of 48 degrees. Canaan Valley WV and Thomas WV dipped to 30 degrees. Flagstaff AZ was the cold spot in the nation with a low of 30 degrees. Coolidge, just 180 miles away, was the hot spot in the nation with an afternoon high of 105 degrees. (The National Weather Summary)
1989 – Thunderstorms produced severe weather in the south central and southeastern U.S. during the day and night. Thunderstorms spawned eleven tornadoes, including one which tore the roof off a restaurant at Bee Branch, AR, injuring six persons. The tornado tossed one car into the restaurant, and another car over it. Temperatures soared into the 90s across much of Florida. Lakeland reported a record high of 99 degrees for the second day in a row. (The National Weather Summary) (Storm Data)

The latest cpc gives us below normal temps into July? Bring it and rock n roll will never die!!!!
Every day the rest of this week will be below normal! An absolutely incredible below normal temp pattern with no change in sight!
As I thought might happen today, water temps at Holland State park have topped 60 degrees today. Doesn’t take long with full sun and mild temps.
Been outside burning all day normally it’s to warm to have a fire during the day this time year but not today getting the YARDOFBRICKS cleaned up …INDY!!
Everything is as green as I’ve ever seen it for this time of year. And today is another absolutely perfect day!
Yes another below normal temp day! Excellent! Keep em coming!
Let’s keep these below normal temps rocking all year long! I love it!
The water temperature on the Great Lakes can depend on the wind direction and the water depth where the reading was taken. Here are the conditions at south Lake Michigan buoy
https://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_page.php?station=45007
and the north lake Michigan buoy
https://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_page.php?station=45002
Note that the water temperatures at both locations are much colder then the shore water temperature reported at Holland. So my take on this is that the water temperatures on lake Michigan are between the upper 30’s to mid-40’s at this time.

All true, but generally people aren’t out swimming by the buoys. The water temps by the shore where people are in the water are not to bad compared to what they were just a week or two ago.
Tell Spring is over severe weather is starting to fade away across the United States not that many Tornadoes like the record start back in May. I could not imagine camping along lk Michigan with record high water levels lake temptures in the 40’s and air temps only in the 50’s not a great time probably going through a lot of wood ..Warmer days ahead we can only hope for mid June standards lol…Have a great Tuesday ..INDY!
We were at Holland State park yesterday evening, and although cool, the water is warming fast. Not in the 40’s, but 57. With plenty of sun today and temps in the upper 70’s, the water temp will probably top 60 today. Just about average for early June. Check the stats here:
https://tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov/stationhome.html?id=9087031
That water temperature will fluctuate depending on the wind direction. Up with a west wind down with a east wind. My guess is that with a east wind the water temperature there would fall into the mid 40’s

Agreed. So today with a sustained W to SW wind temps should moderate a bit.
A lake mi water temp of 57 degrees is cool? What a joke! You will get hypothermia with temps that cold! That is a horrible water temp. I try and keep my pool around 85 degrees for comfortable swimming!!!
I never said I was swimming in it, just walking along the shoreline. Really wasn’t that bad walking along the edge. For 10 days into June, it’s within a few degrees of where it would normally be.
Saw on the news this morning that there were only two days in May suitable enough to plant corn. If it doesn’t dry out soon, it will be a tough year for our farmers.
