Sunny and Dry

This weather though enjoyable makes for a slow time for the blog as high pressure in Canada has blocked any storms from advancing into Michigan.  It has been a good time to get post winter cleanup on the yard done.  We do have some early flowers pushing up from the ground though it has been a slow process due to the cold and lack of rain.  It is 17° at 7am this morning in Otsego and most of the area is in the low 20s.

The geese are back at work in Allegan – they come back there every year and raise their young.  I think we are going to have a bunch of them this year as I counted at least seven yesterday.  There is a pond and wetland for them to the east of the property.  I also saw my first robin yesterday.

The cool dry weather of the past week will continue through the weekend. The next storm system will just miss Michigan to the south Friday night into Saturday with a considerable amount of snow just south of I-80. The pattern finally changes early next week when a storm from the Central Plains heads toward the Great Lakes. This system could bring a good soaking to the area with warmer temperatures which will be welcome as it is getting very dry.

Bittersweet Resort is closed but is planning to be open on Saturday for the last time.  They are the only place in the area with snow (18 inches) and I think next week with warming temperatures and rain most of that will be gone.

The powerhouse programs are getting knocked out, so maybe this is Blue’s year? It sure would be nice to have a B1G team win the title.

Every post lately could have been titled Sunny and Dry.

Unless there is a lot of snow in April and May this year most major reporting locations in Norther Michigan will end the 2017/18 winter season with below average snow fall amounts.

Here in Grand Rapids the total remains at 71.7” and holding.

Who would have thought? The way some posts on here have been, you would think all the stations were having way above to record setting snowfall amounts this past Winter. Who knew?
But yeah, I think about 80% of our snow came in two weeks of December, and then the first week of February. You take away those 3 weeks, and we would be looking at record low totals.

This has to be one of the sunniest March stretches we’ve ever seen.

For all the supposed “cool” talk, we are barely 1 degree below average for March and still above average for 2018 – with warmer than average temps coming next week.

Slim

It looks like the sunniest March at Grand Rapids is a reported 75.6% in 1918 the average for GR is under 50% at 48.7% the cloudiest was a reported 22.1% in 1904. As for “cool” vs “warm or mild” that is all a perspective. Your “warm” could be someones “cold”

Exactly. Since March 11th, GR has received 79.5% of the possible sunshine and climbing!

The clear cool, dry weather continues I had a low of 21° here at my house the official low at the airport looks to be 24° This March is still on track to be only the 6th time in the last 30 years and 12th in the last 60 years to not reach 60° or better in March. And looking ahead at this time the warmest in might get all the way to the 7th of April may only be in the mid 50’s (of course we already had 60° days in February) at this time it is sunny and… Read more »
