Above is the current snow depth for the CONUS. Lots of snow on the ground in Canada, New England and the Rockies.
Below are the CPC guesses for the next four weeks – with the exception of a brief warmup next week we could continue in a pattern of below normal temperatures through mid April. Many of the models are pointing to this holding true.

So far March 2018 mean temperature is 32.5° (-1.4°) it has been dry as only 0.51” of rain and melted snow has fallen there has been 4.9” of snow fall this month. While it looks like Grand Rapids will add to the rain fall total it still looks like we will not make 60° or better if that happens it would be only the 20 time in the last 80 years that it did not reach 60 or better in March.
Slim
Slim, looks like we’ve gone below average for winter snowfall now. Is that correct??
Correct, March snowfall is significantly below average for the month and we are now below average for the season as well.
March average for the 1980/2010 is 8.1″ in the last 30 years the average is 7.5″ at this time it looks like this year will end up at the current 4.9″ the all time range for March is between 0″ in 1910 and 36.0″ in 1965 the average April snow fall is just under 2″ with a range of between 0″ in 1998 and 15.6″ in 1961 and it has snowed in May in the past. BTW since 1900 the total seasonal snow fall average in Grand Rapids is 66.6″
Slim
Yes but only by about 2″ or so. And it depends on what 30 year average you use. The seasonal average using the 1980/2010 average the seasonal snow fall for Grand Rapids is 73.9″ but using the last 30 years the average is 77.4″ so far this year Grand Rapids total snow fall is at 71.7″
We will have to wait until later in the spring to see how the season ends up as we still have several more weeks where it could snow.
Slim
100% sunshine yesterday! This 2 week sunny stretch is extraordinary for March in Michigan. Another sunny weekend upcoming with no snow in sight. I love it!
I am rooting for a very snowy April! Bring it on!

What happened to your big snow storm this week? You were wrong again
I think it is time for you to get out the golf clubs. Have a great day & enjoy the sunshine,
It’s going to be a great season for maple syrup. As long as we get some precipitation, the fruit should flourish too.
yes it looks to be a great year for the maple syrup in Michigan and it should be that way in the east as well.
