Sunny and Dry

Rant

I hate it when people burn their leaves out here in the country.  Granted some don’t have any other way of disposing of them – I am a firm believer of composting and I have a large woods around the property to rake them in to.  Compost piles produce some great soil for planting and great big worms for fishing.  Burning produces great big clouds of smoke which annoy the neighbors depending on wind direction.  With ground conditions getting dry it can also cause a fire to get out of hand if the wind is blowing and sparks land where they weren’t intended to land.  With dry conditions expected to continue most of the week please take care if you have to burn and don’t drop your cigarette butts out the window of your car.

Another great weekend to be outside.  I was actually out without a shirt yesterday.  Being heat intolerant it was a perfect day for me to get some yard work done as the temperatures were in the mid 50s and sunny.  The cats want to be outside now and the dogs like to go out and lay in the sun.  Our 14 year old Aussie likes laying in a snow bank when there is snow on the ground – he is a cool air animal like myself.  Our lab is much younger and prefers to run around with her nose to the ground – I bet she would be a good hunting dog if I trained her to do so.  When we first got her she had a mind of here own but we found her easy to train to be obedient and comply to basic commands.

The feature image is from the Muskegon GLERL webcam showing the sunrise reflected off the clouds and the calm lake yesterday morning.

Mostly clear skies and even warmer afternoon temperatures are expect today thanks to a Pacific origin high pressure system moves into Lower Michigan from the west. Highs should be well up into the 50s inland of the Lake Michigan shore. Today is likely to be the warmest day of this entire week (through Sat the 24th).

A back door cold front will come through the area this evening bringing the southern edge of a large polar origin high pressure system into the area. The polar high pressure system gets blocked by an east coast storm in the Tuesday to Wednesday time frame, that will in turn result in those cooler than normal temperatures and dry weather to persist most of this coming week.

There is a hint of a significant precipitation producing system moving into Southwest Michigan toward next weekend but it is to early to say just how that system will impact this area if in fact it does not end up going south Michigan like several storms already have.

What a warm sunny weekend! And it looks very dry upcoming. We will be below average snowfall for the winter in a few days.

“There remains at least a chance a storm system coming out of the Central Plains late in the week could bring snow or mixed rain and snow to the area Saturday but at this points a more southern track seems likely to keep Southwest Michigan dry into the following week.”

Yep, even the “trusted” pivotal weather model has taken it completely out of Michigan!

The good thing about this pattern is that if it holds, it will be an excellent season for fruit.

For sure Mark, that’s why I’ve been happy with the weather so far in March.

Great….everyone else on the blog was either golfing or enjoying the sun and warmth in their own yard or close to home today. No one else is going out seeking snow and cold after living thru 5 miserable months of it!

Another mild and below average snowfall winter is about to be behind us! Bring on the SPRING WARMTH!

As you can imagine, I am heartbroken. Izzo was outcoached, IMO.

I’m such a homer. I had MSU over Michigan in the finals. Michigan is the hottest team and I hope the win it all. GO BLUE.

Mookie
Mookie

The myth of Izzo is starting to be revealed. He hasn’t done anything in years with top 5 talent. Go Blue!

ROCKY (Rockford)
ROCKY (Rockford)

And the myth of the U of M football coach being the savior for U and M football has already been proven. He is totally overrated and calls a horrible offensive game plan!

Andy W
Andy W

That’s why he got rid of all the dead weight offensive coordinators and restocked with proven successful coordinators for the upcoming season. Back to back 10 win seasons and then a “down” 8 win season is great compared to the 8 years of futility before him. He’s making the necessary changes to turn things around especially if Shea Patterson is available to play right away. But why are we talking about football during basketball season??? It’s like talking about horrible winter in June! Beilein is a class act and his team deserves all of the success he’s guided them to!

Mark (East Lansing)
Mark (East Lansing)

Myth? He’s the best and most successful coach in the B1G.

Mookie
Mookie

Izzo hasn’t done much of anything since 2000 compared to the talent he’s had. I just heard on the radio that Michigan has a winning record against him in the past several years. And MSU keeps underperforming mightily in the NCAA which is really the main measuring stick. John Beilein has done a far superior job with inferior talent.

Andy W
Andy W

No need to sports battle on the weather blog. Mark was very gracious after his team lost today, he even offered up a GO BLUE. That is a class act thing to do and I respect him for that!

Mark (East Lansing)
Mark (East Lansing)

23-10 in the NCAA tournament in the last ten years – including two semifinal appearances and a national championship appearance. No other B1G team even comes close.

Mark (East Lansing)
Mark (East Lansing)

And I have a lot of respect for Beilein. He’s been doing this a long time – longer than Izzo – and he is a solid coach.

Mookie
Mookie

Three straight NCAA tournaments where MSU couldn’t even get past the first weekend with superior talent. 7-9 against Michigan since 2010. Izzo is 1-11 versus Duke, 0-7 against UNC, and 1-5 against Syracuse.

We have a race here next Saturday. It would be awesome if the snow/rain would miss us.

Andy W
Andy W

Looks like you’ll be alright Sandy. Updated NWS Discussion.

Confidence remains quite low regarding the potential for
accumulating snow on Friday night and Saturday. Deterministic model
and ensemble solutions continue to struggle on the track of the low
pressure system next weekend.

There is also the possibility of that system passing well south of
the state and the precip completely missing Lower Michigan. This
idea has merit since that persistent upper trough over ern Canada
and New England could easily shear the system out.

Sandy (Hudsonville)

That is great news. Thanks.

Golf course still have snow in the shade and partially frozen ground and a ton of dead brown grass! What a joke! Give me skiing in March over golf with poor course conditions anyday! Who would have thought?

Andy W
Andy W

LOL!! Ok, 99.5% of this blog agrees with me so, enjoy your 6.5 hour round trip drive for a couple hours of skiing on puddles and sludge!

I don’t golf a whole lot, but I do disc golf a ton, and this is the optimal weather and conditions. No underbrush to lose your discs, no heat and humidity, no snow, and no mud because it’s so dry out. Maybe if I didn’t work or have kids I would have time to drive hundreds of miles, but right now there is no way. We haven’t retained snow on the ground for any length of time in over a month, and anything winter related has been stowed away. Give me this weather year around!

Andy W
Andy W

Absolutely right Barry! Can easily find balls in the woods and there is zero snow on the courses ive been on now! Great golfing conditions out there this weekend!

Andy W
Andy W

Hmmm….drive 5 minutes to play 18 holes of golf today or drive over 3 hours each way to ski on man made slush??? Pretty easy decision for me, see you at the GOLF course!!!

Forget golf? Tell that to the piles of people that were out golfing yesterday and probably even more today with temps in the mid 50s. Beautiful weather out lately with all the sun!

It is beautiful out there. Took the dog for a walk & it was great not having to wear boots & all the winter gear you need when it is so cold out. The sunshine feels great.

ENJOY!

We will need to continue to monitor trends as the path of this
system will be critical to how much pcpn we get and it`s type.
Suffice it to say at this point, there is potential for accumulating
snow late Friday night into Saturday, especially along and south of
I-96 given the current solutions.

Andy W

ENJOY THIS!!

From WOODTV:

NEXT WEEK Monday will be partly sunny, a little cooler and breezy. Tuesday and Wednesday will be partly sunny . Highs will be in the low 40s. Thursday looks sunny and pleasant. Our next significant chance of rain will come Friday night or Saturday.
