We have a moderate to enhanced risk of severe weather today for most of lower Michigan.
Most of us woke up to heavy downpours with humid conditions. We had 1.14 inches of rain since this began last evening. Our high temp was 93.4° with a dewpoint of 68.8 yesterday. We woke up to a warm 78° with a dewpoint of 72.8 – the air is very thick this morning.
Severe thunderstorms are expected this afternoon and evening, with the main threats expected to be damaging wind gusts to 70 MPH. Large hail up to 1 inch will also be possible along with a few spin-up tornadoes.
Storms are expected to initiate between Noon-2 PM this afternoon in far southwest lower MI, then progress east into the late afternoon and evening becoming increasingly more widespread, especially east of US-131.
Storms will gradually intensify this morning and likely require a severe thunderstorm watch issuance by 11am-12pm EDT. Max thunderstorm gust potential will initially range 45-60 mph but strengthen into the 50-70 mph range towards midday as both the magnitude/coverage of damaging gusts increases. DISCUSSION...Radar mosaic shows a developing band of storms from east-central IL to the Chicago south side with another cluster of storms developing over northwest IN expected to move into southwest Lower MI during the next 1-2 hours. Visible-satellite imagery shows cloud streets across northern IN into southern Lower MI, indicative of a very moist boundary layer. Specifically regarding moisture, the 6am EDT Detroit, MI observed sounding showed a 16.3 g/kg lowest 100mb mean mixing ratio, a climatological maximum through June 15th during the period of record (since 1949). Pockets of strong heating per cloud breaks will contribute to a moderately unstable airmass by mid-late morning with little to any remaining convective inhibition as temperatures warm into the low-mid 80s. KIWX and KGRR show 30-40 kt in the 1-2 km AGL layer with 50 kt around 3km AGL at KGRR. As the mid-level migratory shortwave trough approaches the Great Lakes from MO today, additional storm development/strengthening is expected. As a result, damaging gusts will become more common as bands of storms intensify through the late morning and into the early afternoon. A tornado or two cannot be ruled out given the moist boundary layer and adequate speed shear in the lowest 1-2 km, but the general unidirectional southerly wind profile will tend to favor damaging gusts as the primary severe hazard.
SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 274 IS IN EFFECT UNTIL 600 PM EDT
I have rejoined the world. Now have power back on.

WOOD tv was in Zeeland tonight to cover the damage. It is a mess everywhere I went today.

Odd…Ada experiencing the most sustained, potent wind gusts of the the day, over the past 20 minutes…maybe from the action to out ENE?
Fans off windows wide open winds blowing fresh air in ….Feels great outside …temp 74* degrees INDY
It’s our turn, finally. Torrential rain and windy, but not severe levels.
Well, that was underwhelming. Storms around us for hours and when they finally reached us, just a good soaking with some wind. However, I would rather be disappointed than lose power and/or deal with the damage so many are dealing with right now.
P.S. ArtPrize has been cancelled. Bummer.
Currently out at the YARDof BRICKS NE of GR it’s 72* degrees feels great if my fire pit wasn’t full of water it would be a great night to have a fire lol…INDY
It’s great to have a few on here talk about Thunderstorms other then how warm its going to get day after day I had such a great 2 days of tracking storms the severeness of our storm that rolled through thee YARDofBRICKS NE of GR here was mainly heavy rain thank goodness now let’s bring on the cooler temps and less humidity thanks cold front have a good rest of the day ….INDY
97 degrees by the lake in Muskegon is something to talk about. Incredible heat.
Maybe we could all get together to call our local, lonely, attention starved “Meteorologists”, and request that they head back home, take naps and return the networks to their regularly scheduled droning. Garden variety Thunderstorms, with occasional downpours…clearly, we are not Kansas/Oklahoma. News will be a non-stop fascination with downed trees…obviously weak, damaged, unhealthy, old, hollow, etc. Regardless, hoping everyone enjoyed today’s rumbles.
So really long sounding thunder here. MV you hearing it too?
So driving home there were large branches and trees snapped off and laying everywhere. A lot of crews out already cleaning up the mess. Got home and couldn’t get up our driveway because it was blocked with trees and debris. Quick count around the property I see 4 trees snapped off and down. Luckily none of them landed on the house or barn.
Count your lucky stars!
75 mph recorded in Grandville.
Just checked my weather station which is at my house, about 5 miles East of here, and it recorded 0.56” of rain. I would imagine if it was anything like it was here, it probably didn’t get an accurate reading. Top wind gust recorded was 57mph, which I also don’t think is very accurate either. Probably was actually a bit more than that. Wild storm!
My guess on the wind here was in the 30 to 40 MPH range. Lots of leaves down a few branches. Not the worst but winds can be very hit and miss. I will go for a walk and in a little while and see if there is any more damage.

The rain has now stopped here. Rain fall from the storm for my house 0.63″ It now much cooler here with a temperature of 70.

Storms just to our west. Sun has been out here for the past half hour.
Storm reports:
1216pm East Grand Rapids – 54 MPH
1155am Holland – semi truck flipped over. Street lights knocked down. There are some trees on homes.
1145am 2 miles S of Holland – 73 MPH
Sirens blaring in every direction outside. I’m guessing there has to be a lot of trees and lines down.
The front just went thru here with heavy rain and winds of about 35 to 40 MPH no damage that I can see but there was a lot of heavy rain
Slim
Main Street here has a foot and a half deep water right now. Cars are trying to go through but not all are making it. Just crazy. If I get a sec I’ll snap some pics.
The sky is getting a little dark to the west here at this time. Just light rain falling now.

About to get steamrolled in Northwest Kent County! I’m ready!!!
Perfect…a complete, total, flawless MISS of “weather” for Ada…not a surprise. Sprinkles.
Wow what a storm here in downtown Zeeland! I haven’t seen rain and wind like this in years! In front of our business on Main Street a construction detour sign just blew through someone’s cars front window. Looks like a hurricane outside!
Wow, keep us posted. Here at my house just moderate rain and no wind and no thunder at this time.

Light rain falling here now. Most of the storm is to the east of me. here with that light falling the current temperature is now 82 with a DP of 72.

In looking at the lightning map, There is a lot of lightning strikes in the storm just along the lake shore south of Holland. Less so in the smaller storm to the south of GR.

I’m still working from home, but it’s nice to have multiple monitors so I can keep an eye on the weather. 🙂
Lansing has not had a Moderate Risk since 2013 (thanks Bill!).
A new record high of 97 was recorded at Muskegon. This was not only a new record for June 9th it was also the 2nd warmest high for June at Muskegon just behind the record of 98 set in 1995. While Muskegon is on Lake Michigan it can get warm there with a east wind and yesterday there was a SE wind. At Grand Rapids the official high of 93 tied the record set there in 1964. I live about 17 miles NW of the airport at Grand Rapids and about 20 miles SE of the Muskegon airport. I had… Read more »
Sure…let your imaginations run wild today, regardless of the fact that we already know the outcome. Breezy with a chance of showers…as always.
Crazy that in May GR ended up with below normal temps, even with all the warm weather hype on this blog! Incredible!
Living in the past much? What cold bias! We are above average temps for 2020. I love it!
Here at my house I recorded 0.48″ of rain fall. It warmed up into the upper 70’s overnight but with the last round or rain it is now down to 75 with a DP of 70 here with clear skies. At the airport the last report was 78 with a DP of 74 and cloudy. The worst of the storms could be to the east of 131 today.

I agree Slim I’m thinking the next SPC run will trim everything back especially In west Michigan…INDY
Nope. Ottawa county under a warning right now.
Wrong again!
We had 10 above average days in a row, then 3 cool days, and now we’re on day 9 of average to above average temps! Crazy warmth lately.
80 outside when I got up. Can’t remember the last time that happened. Lots of talk around here about the potential for storms this afternoon. Moderate Risk!
Lansing should have a better chance of big storms then Grand Rapids today.
Slim
2013 was the last time …INDY
More record heat yesterday! And it’s not even officially summer yet.
Last night around 7 we had a quick storm go through. No lightening, but a crazy blast of wind and a torrential downpour of rain. Only lasted 10 minutes, but there was debris all over town. Lot of trees and power lines down as well. Not sure what the top wind gust was because the internet went down so my weather station wasn’t recording.
Same thing happened here. It traveled due north, which is odd. Afterwards, we could see the wall of rain coming down from that cloud. It was cool.
An almost unbelievable 81 degrees this morning when I got up at 4:30 with a dew point of 73! Yesterday was our 3rd 90 degree day here, and Summer doesn’t even start for over a week yet. Not pleasant at all working, but I guess it’s better than not working.
Once again if it’s not the cool lake Michigan it’s the timing of the storms they are starting to form east of Grand Rapids this morning I have been Tracking since about 230am the colors on the map look better then the storms today in Grand Rapids by this afternoon it will feel a ton better outside again so long heat and humidity mid 70’s as far as the eye can see have a nice Wednesday ..INDY..
I will have weather history tomorrow – we will leave this open for severe weather reports today.
