Return to Summer

We will return to a more summerlike pattern for the start of October with plenty of sunshine and temperatures of 80 or better.  Our next chance of rain comes on Wednesday night through Saturday when we begin a more active weather pattern and a return to near-normal temperatures in the 60s.

Today through at least next Wednesday looks to be a warm period. While it will be warm, record highs will be tough to reach for most locations on most of the warm days. A couple of the records could be approached.

Forecast Discussion

Latest observations show patchy fog in a few locations, but not
nearly as widespread as last night and not as dense, either. What
fog is out there will quickly dissipate after sunrise.

High pressure remains in control of our weather. The upper ridge
is sending short waves northeastward across Wisconsin the UP and
southern Wisconsin and we can see the showers/storms there. The
only remnants affecting our weather currently are some clouds that
are drifting south from convection over the UP and northern Lower.

The NAM and HREF are handling the clouds the best currently and
show a decrease in cloudiness as we head toward the afternoon
today. Temperatures should top 80 across the cwa and again fall
into the 50s tonight under mostly clear skies. As heights build
Monday, temperatures will reach the lower to perhaps mid 80s.

Record highs are in the mid to upper 80s today except at the lake
shore where the record at MKG is 81. Given that MKG was 79
Saturday, they may approach their record.

Record highs Monday are again in the 86 to 89 range, except at MKG
which is 83. We should see plenty of sunshine again. So, we may
be close to a few records, but likely fall a degree or two short.

- Unseasonably warm temperatures into mid week, then cooling off

The warm air advection persists into Wednesday leading to a
prolonged period of well above normal temperatures. The 925 mb
thermal ridge peaks on Wednesday with values around 22 deg C. This
supports temperatures in the low to mid 80`s. That feature shifts
east of the region by Thursday so a gradual cooling trend will
start then. Ensemble temperature forecasts support max T`s
reaching into the low to mid 80`s. Then cold air advection
strengthens going into next weekend. 925 mb temperatures fall to
around 6 deg C. With clouds and showers around then, we may see
temperatures struggling to reach 60 degrees.

- Potential for some rain end of next week into the weekend

A cold front will be moving into the area Wednesday night into
Thursday. This feature will be slowing down as it arrives, which
will allow for added moisture to advect in from the southwest. A
series of shortwaves dig down from the Canadian Prairies Thursday
into Friday eventually forming a deepening surface wave over
southern Ontario. This feature will draw down plenty of cooler air
from Canada leading to lake effect clouds and showers especially
Friday into Saturday. Most ensemble members are showing QPF during
the period, which supports increase the POP`s.

Wow, can you believe this? The annual Twin Cities Marathon has been canceled due to record-breaking heat in Minneapolis and St. Paul. The high reached 90 there today. That broke the old record of 87 set in 1897.

My wife and I took a trip to Detroit yesterday and seen Miggy play one last time. The trip was mostly good. It was very foggy all the way over. You can see the tornado damage along I 96 real well. Even in the fog it was easy to make out. We made good time until we got to the construction on I 96 in Detroit. That has been going on for a long time. I left early to compensate for it but it still took longer than I guessed. But we still got to the park to get our… Read more »
