Rain Today – Sunny the Rest of the Week

We had .16 of an inch of rain overnight, the heavier showers moved to the east and west of Otsego yesterday, and overnight within five miles to either side of the city,  I have a handheld lightning detector that detects lightning out to 40 miles, it was beeping quite a lot over the afternoon. We have 6.50 inches of rain for the month most of which fell in the first half of August so I would say we haven’t had any shortage of rainfall this month in the Otsego area.

Our high yesterday was 81° and the low was 61°.

There is less of a chance of rain today in SW Michigan with increasing chances the further east you go. After today we will have another week of sunny skies and mainly dry weather.

Sunrise today is 6:57, and sunset is 8:37 pm.

Forecast Discussion

We will be under the mid-upper-level trough this morning and the
weak and slow-moving surface low will migrate toward SE Mich / NW
Ohio by late in the day. Surface instability during the daytime
will be less than yesterday, now generally less than 1000 J/kg.
Vertical wind shear also appears to be less than yesterday and
should be only about 10 knots within the 0-6 km layer. So while
scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms are again possible,
severe weather is unlikely. The atmosphere within the convective
depth still lacks any substantial dry layer, and PW is still
about 1.5 inches, so some heavier downpours can occur.

Weak upper-level ridging on Monday will tend to warm up the mid
levels and put a lid on convective chances, more so in western
parts of the lower peninsula. Much of the region will remain in a
fairly nondescript pattern this week featuring low baroclinicity
and weak winds through the troposphere, as the polar jet is
contained within Canada and a weaker subtropical jet extension is
focused over the Southeast US. A deepening trough over northern
Ontario could send a weak cold front through Michigan on Thursday
with a minor chance of rain showers. There is good ensemble
support for near-normal temperatures for the next several days,
then the spread of solutions increases Friday and afterward.

We didn’t get much precip yesterday. Plenty of sun until late afternoon. As evening approached, it was all around us. Some of the cloud formations were really neat. Should’ve taken pics.

Looks like another of many below normal temp days is on tap and then sun and near normal temps the rest of the week! Wow, just wow! It could be the best summer ever! Keep the near normal temps rocking! No heat waves!

Agreed. It has been a fantastic summer so far.

We’ve had 18(?) days of 90 degrees or better, plenty of cool nights, ample amounts of rain, enough lightning and thunder to keep this weather nerd satisfied, and too many sunny days to count. Like you said, this summer has had a little something for everyone.

Also to note quite a bit of fog here this morning. Making for some nice pictures.

We picked up a total of 0.70” of rain at my house yesterday. A lot of that came in about a 20-25 minute huge downpour with quite a bit of thunder. No shortage of rain here. Ionia County picked up the most rain of any county in West MI it appears. Radar estimated 2-3” of rain fell only about 3 miles away from my house so I was right on the edge of the more significant rain.
