Pleasant Weather Ahead

We have a pleasant 64° at 6 am this morning with the retreating subtropical air mass moving out of the state.  We had .12 of an inch of rain yesterday which gives us 3.79 inches for the month of August here at the Center.  Yesterday we reached 88.5° with a 77.8° dewpoint and a feels like temp of 101° which will be the last of this nastiness to close out met summer.

A more pleasant air mass is moving into place, though the temps will be warm they won’t be oppressive and it will be much more of a pleasure to be outside.  Cooler weather can be expected to start off this workweek. Highs will be cooler than what we’ve been seeing the past couple of days, with temps in the 80s today, then into the upper 70s for the rest of the week.  The best news will be the dewpoints falling into the 50s rather than the 70s.

Chances of rain are slim to none for the week.

Sunrise today is 7:05 – Sunset is 8:20 pm.

Forecast Discussion

--Stretch of dry/pleasant weather this week--

The cold front has passed through and surface ridging will impact
the region most of this week. We can finally say farewell to the
oppressive heat and humidity of the last week, which will be
replaced by much more comfortable dew points in the 50s and highs
near 80.

West-northwest flow off Lk MI today should limit coverage of
diurnal cumulus so a predominately sunny day is expected. There
is a weak sfc trough which drops in from the north late tonight
and Tuesday. This feature could produce a period of cloudiness and
perhaps even a few sprinkles as it comes through. Otherwise the
persistent low level northeast flow behind it this week delivers a
stretch of fine late summer weather.

Cooler H8 temps behind the sfc trough and troughing at H5 should
promote at least scattered if not broken diurnal cumulus both
Tuesday and Wednesday. Some high cloudiness from Ida may also
brush the region on Tuesday.

--Next chance of rain (low) is over the weekend--

A wave over the Pacific Northwest may begin to impact MI by the
weekend. Evolving/deepening trough aloft may send a series of
cold fronts through the region over the holiday weekend that
could trigger some showers and storms. However confidence is
currently low in how this pattern unfolds and how amplified it
becomes, so only low chance pops at this point.

What a heat wave!! Six 90 degree days in a row in my area!! Whew!! Blazing hot summer!!

Slim

I do not see any official report of 6 days in a row of 90 or better. All locations had a day or two of highs in the upper 80’s In July of 2020 there were 8 days in a row of 90 or better and 11 days in a row of 88 or better.

I had an overnight low of 63 here with 0.06 in of rain in a quick pop up wind and rain event yesterday around 4 pm. Looks like that will be all the rain we will see until late in the week.

Slim

The overnight low here at my house was 64 the official overnight low at GRR looks to have been 67. At this time it is sunny here with a temperature of 72 and while the dew point is still up at 68 it is much less humid then the past few days.

A little update on August 2021. This will end up being one of the warmest August since 2010 in most locations. Here is where we stand with just 2 days to go. At Grand Rapids the mean is 74.5 that is a departure of +3.5 and if the month were to end today this would be the 8th warmest on record. At Muskegon the mean is also 74.5 for a departure of +3.6 and at this time it is the 3rd warmest August of record. At Holland the mean there is 73.9 (mostly due to some cooler overnight lows) and… Read more »

It seems that August was warmer than July… and this past winter it seemed February was cooler than January. In my opinion, the warmest/coldest times of the year have been occurring later than they used to.

Slim

Yes, August will indeed warmer than July.

Zero rain for us as well as most of Ottawa county. Yesterday’s line just jumped right over us. The last rain we’ve had was 2 weeks ago with the big storms that knocked out the power. Everyone’s yards are brown and crispy.
