Once upon a time in the magical kingdom of Michigan on the first of April all of the snow melted with warm air in the 70s the flowers popped from the ground and all the creatures came out from their dens and caves to celebrate spring. The land turned green with grasses and the leaves sprung from the branches of the trees and all was good.
There was an evil witch who lived far north of Michigan beyond the borders of the great lake called Superior who hated spring. She lived in the mountains of snow and ice and caused the curse of winter to surround her lands. Every year she fought with the queen of the southern lands who brought spring into the evil witches kingdom. Luckily, with the help of the gods of the seasons they over-whelmed the evil witch, though some years it became a struggle because of the great mounds of snow and ice she had created in her kingdom. Never fear my friends, though it may still seem like winter there will be redemption from the cold and snow.
The winter weather advisory is set to expire at 11am this morning. I would like to say that spring has conquered winter but we will not have a reprieve for several more days.
Snow moving east across Southern Lower Michigan will exit the area later this morning. However, snow moving east across Central Lower Michigan will be a bit more persistent and heavy at times later this morning. Snow showers will continue to be possible over parts of Central Lower Michigan with a gradual transition tonight to lighter lake effect snow confined to near the lakeshore. Today will be blustery due to a combination of highs in the 30s and frequent gusts of 30 to 40 mph.
This weekend will remain abnormally cold with highs Saturday generally in the lower 30s. Another round of accumulating snow mixed with rain is expected Sunday night into Monday. Temperatures then should gradually moderate, reaching the 50s by the end of the week.
>>>>BREAKING WEATHER NEWS>>>>We are headed for record or near record LOW TEMPS over the next 2 nights despite mookie constantly talking about how warm it is and how warm it will be! Incredible! This is an amazing streak of late March and April cold!
Temps no better than mid 40s for several more months. Ch13 showed a forecast for next Saturday involving 10 inches of snow. 65 looks to be the high temp for 2018…there is no hope.
Right on!
What do we have here? Certainty not a big warm up!

Either way, 20 some above or 20 some below average, no one will remember it 5 or 10 years from now. March and April are known to be months with big temp swings, nothing out of the ordinary. Check the record highs and lows for this time of year, massive difference. What is remembered are the times like last September or March of 2012 when the temps were 40 to 50 degrees away from average, and not just for a day but a whole week. A few years from now no one is going to be saying “remember that April… Read more »
I bet the person from the North in the story as named Rocky. Ha, couldn’t resist that one.
Not sure why some are so shocked with cooler weather during spring break. When I was a kid, seems like every spring break it was snowing. We’re not breaking any records, just your typical windy, wet and raw spring break. There have been far more heat records broken lately than cold records.
Interesting that April 6th, 2017 we received 0.4″ of snow. April 8th, 2016 saw almost 6″ of snow with two additional snowy days afterwards. So this is pretty typical for early April in Michigan – at least lately.
Don’t forget 20* degrees below normal for April is also typical right? Lol! INDYDOG14!
April 7th, 2016 had a high of 39, April 8th had a high of 37, and April 9th had a high of 36 (with a low of 21).
Here are some interesting facts as to just how cold this April has started. For the at least the first 6 days (and maybe more) the warmest it will be is just 43° and the departure is now at -11.5° going back to 1950 Here are some past cold April’s 1950, 1953, 1956, 1961, 1971, 1972,1975, 1982, 1996, 2000, 2013 Of all of those April’s only two did not have highs in the 70’s (1950 67° and 1961 68°) the rest had highs in the 80’s ranging from 78° in 2013 and 1956 to 72° in 1953. This April has… Read more »
Running 27* below normal April 6th 50’s will be a nice thought INDYDOG14!!

What a WINTER and what an April so far! COLD and SNOW rules!
Middle of April and seeing highs maybe in the high 50’s that’s cold for this time of year I thought someone was saying 70’s next week I don’t think that’s going to happen!! INDYDOG14!
WOOD has 63 degrees for Friday. Warmer than average.
1907 is the current coldest April on record had a high of 64° with the cold of that April coming from the 8th to the 18th. With the warmest of 68° on the 28th Also note there is now backing off on how mild it might get late next week.

The great winter snowstorm of April brought a dusting that will be melted by noon. 60’s next week!
Just a dusting overnight. The ground is not even covered. Not WWA-worthy. I was wondering if would need to shovel. Already winterized the snowblower a couple of weeks ago. I’m ready for some springtime temps.
Agreed and not a WWA! However we did get more snow than you – probably around an inch or so and the roads are just a little wet!
Nice write up MV and yes winter is hanging on for at least the next 5 or 6 days or so. This will probably be my last weekend of skiing! All good things must come to end sometime! Check out the 5 day snow map for snow country!
