During Severe Weather Awareness Week which is from April 8 to the 14th we will have some tips and info on storm safety.
Now is the time to get a “go” bag together. We are lucky to have a full sized basement under our house – the dogs will follow us down the steps to safety, they know something bad is going on outside. I have seen what severe storms can do and the lowest place is the safest place. I will get into this more next week.
We have a cold 20° at 7am this morning with just over an inch of snow on the grown. We have crocus struggling to bloom – they look pretty forlorn with their little heads poking up through the snow.
Here is the total snowfall for Tuesday and Wednesday (to the left). A little sleet and freezing rain also occurred in Central Lower Michigan. Up to three quarters of an inch of rain fell Tuesday afternoon in Southern Michigan. Quarter-inch to half-inch diameter hail occurred from numerous small thunderstorms across Southern Michigan Tuesday afternoon. I have a hand held lightning detector which works rather well – it detected lighting 40 miles away.
There is another winter weather advisory for most of west Michigan and four counties to the east.
Another round of snow is expected Thursday night into Friday. Snow totals will be variable, but enough to cause tricky traffic conditions. Snow may fall in occasional heavier bursts overnight.
Friday, wind gusts to around 35 mph out of the west will reinforce the cold air over the region, and scattered snow showers will linger into the day.
This will be the wet slushy variety.
This will likely affect the Friday morning commute in many areas. This will be followed by unseasonably cold temperatures with highs generally in the 30s both Friday and Saturday.
A gradual warmup is expected next week with temperatures getting into the 50s by the end of the week.
Looking at the long range models we may see some 60s within the next couple weeks – so never fear spring is near.
Bring it!

Not too worried about it, Winter’s funeral comes Wednesday! Similar to the last few years, first week of April absolutely crappy weather, then SPRING begins!

COLD and SNOW Rocks and ROCK n ROLL will never die!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Another WWA! INCREDIBLE! What a cold stretch! Nubs Nob here I come! The snow conditions up there are like mid winter! TONS of fresh natural snow and cold temps! I am not sure how it could better for this time of year!!!!!!!!!
Less and less snow for GR on the model runs and warmer and warmer temps upcoming. Love it!
Now this is what I like to see!!
The warming process will commence Saturday night, albeit slowly at
first. Saturday night will be chilly with lows in the teens in most
spots. However, h8 temps will begin to climb and highs Sunday will
rebound to around 40. The warming trend will continue through the
week and with any luck we`ll hit 50 by Wednesday.
I’m pretty sure I was grilling this time last year now I’m shoveling lol!! INDYDOG14!
Probably not INDY, the high was 43 on this date last year and 42 the next day.
I grilled last night, and it was a miserable experience. LOL
Nice try, Indy! Busted
With yesterdays “official” 1.6″ at the airport Grand Rapids is now at 73.3″ for the season (73.8″ is average) so this winter in the snow fall department (thanks to the 32.9″ that fell in December) is now just about average. Depending on how much falls over the next week Grand Rapids could end up abover average.
Slim
Hey Slim, is it just me or has Grand Rapids average snowfall total dropped over the years?? It seems like for years it was like 78 inches??
depending on how much snow falls in a 30 time the “average” will change. The next official update will happen in 2021
Slim
Today is opening day at the Whitecaps and it is going to be a cold one. Here at my house I still have a good amount of snow on the ground and while the airport only looks like it got down to 23° for a low here at my house it dropped all the way down to 16°
Slim
Less than 1 week away from the turn to WARMER weather!!!! Get Ready!!!

Here it comes! Meanwhile, I picture Rocky trying to make a snow angel out of the quarter inch of snow left on the ground before it melts entirely! haha
He’s preparing for his Spring, Summer, Fall hibernation. He’s getting in as many cold posts as he can in the next 6 days before he disappears for the next 8 months!
By Saturday April 14 the average high low here in Grand Rapids is 58/37 so back to near average. Its about time. 24 of the last 35 days have been below average.
Slim
Right before the streak you cited, we had 21 consecutive mild days without a below average day!
Back in February Grand Rapids did. That was then this is now.
Slim
I think we should be talking about a warm weather drought lol!! INDYDOG14!!
