Mostly Sunny Week Ahead

We received no rain yesterday or overnight in Otsego and we have a slight chance this morning before the clouds begin to break up to start another mostly sunny week which seems to be the main theme of our summer thus far.

Storms brewed just east of US131 yesterday and moved eastward.

We are now midway through the month of August already which has been fairly dry.  Below is the drought monitor for last week (the report comes out on Tuesdays):

This week it appears will be dry with a slight chance of rain tomorrow.  As we get into next weekend we may establish a near-normal pattern of temps and rain which should last through the end of the month.

Forecast Discussion

--Storms exiting this morning--

Convection from the approaching cold front continues to move
eastward through central Michigan. The upper level trough
continues to move through Central Canada with cooler air dropping
down across the state today. Given it is still summertime, Max
Temperatures will still be in the low 80s with northerly flow
dominating today.

--Showers and weak storms possible Monday--

As the upper low drops down toward the Great Lakes a secondary
front will move through Moday. Though it is fairly dry, there
could be some isolated showers and thunderstorms on Monday.

--Mild weather this upcoming week--

The surface high builds in late Monday with comfortable dew
points for the rest of the week. A shortwave trough could bring
scattered showers on Wednesday followed by another Canadian
surface high as western ridge/eastern trough longwave pattern is
well established into the end of the week.

Not that I would put too much into it but the long range guesser at Accuweather Paul Pastelok has somehow came up with the analog years of 1995, 1998, 2003, 2005, 2010 and 2016 for this fall and winter long range guess. Hint the above years were NOT good snow fall years here at Grand Rapids.

That would be perfect! Sounds like a repeat of last Winter which seemed to have more rain than snow.

No rain fell here yesterday. For the month I have recorded 1.43” of rain fall. We are now at the half way point for August 2020 and here are some stats from around the state of Michigan. At Grand Rapids the mean so far is 71.0 that is good for a departure of -0.7° the highest reading so far has been 89 and the lowest 52. And there had been 1.34” of rain fall. At Muskegon the mean is 71.8 and that is a departure of +1.0 the highest reading there is 91 and the lowest 49. They have recorded… Read more »
